Diagnosis from Roček et al. 2008, p. 501: "large member of the Pelobatoidea; skull short and broad; vertebral centra procoelous; sacral diapophyses strongly expanded, with distinct skeletal adaptations for burrowing; robust spade present; tibiofibula shorter than femur; astragalus and calcaneus short. Differs from the Pelobatidae in having paired frontoparietals (thus the frontoparietal is not of tripartite origin, as is the case with Pelobates and Eopelobates).
