  1. It has been about 20 years since I last drew anything. Back in my teens, I had designs on being a professional illustrator and even had some modest commission work. But then I left it all aside to pursue academia and writing. Today I decided to see if I still remembered how to draw, and decided on testing that out with a quick 15 minute sketch using a 9B pencil. So it's a bit rough and sloppy... It's like having to relearn how to cursive write after decades of typing. Pencil strokes are not as controlled or elegant as they once were, but at least I seemed to have got it approximately correct, including the foreshortening of the right eye.

    Trilobit-ey doodles

These are some of my trilobite drawings, Some of these are from when I was eight. And yes I know, the Cryptolithus feeding method is outdated and the Hypodicranotus species name is actually striatulus.
  3. BirdsAreDinosaurs

    Quick sketch of oviraptorid hatchling

Just a quick digital sketch of a freshly hatched oviraptorid that I made today. Had to finish it on my last day of my current job, amongst many other things, so it is what it is. I have some spare time before my next job, so I am hoping to do some more serious paleoart in the next weeks!
  4. Neanderthal Shaman

    Old Neanderthal Drawing

Happened upon this old drawing I did of a Neanderthal man when I was 17 or 18 during the height of my caveman obsession. Probably drew it during class when I was supposed to be paying attention. It's pretty amateurish, but it was good to see his face again. I don't know why I drew him so angry looking, he would have looked better with a big toothy grin.
  5. Ludwigia

    Nautilus pompilius

I've been taking a drawing course over the last few months, learning to do portraits of people and animals, but I've been neglecting the fossils. So I figured it was about time to do at least a recent shell. I've also been experimenting with pastels, so it's colorful this time instead of just black & white.
  6. Ludwigia

    A Scorpion

This time I decided to give this Eurypterus lacustris the honor which Malcolm gifted me after a trip to Ridgemount. I used a bit of artistic licence and added the missing appendages. It looks like it's out jogging
  7. carch_23

    T rex drawing

Hey everyone, didnt know there was a thread for drawings lol how cool. Ive always enjoyed drawing, but found that they always come out better when done out of procrastination lol. Anywho, this rex was done today and thought Id share it. It was inspired by the JP rex, although the scales were just too time consuming to draw as I had to go back to studying, so just replaced some of the scales with shading haha. Thanks for looking!
  8. Ludwigia

    Grammoceras group

It's been a while since I set pencil to paper, but I felt the urge a few days ago to try to duplicate one of my favorite ammonite groups in the collection. It's a grouping of 4 Grammoceras thouarsense ammonites found a few years ago in Évrecy, Normandy, France. And here's the original photo I copied it from.
  9. Ludwigia

    Coeloma sp.

    From the album: Sketches

Paleogene, Oligocene, Chatt B, Velje Fjord Formation, Brejning Ton. Found 10 years ago on Mogenstrup beach at Limfjord, Denmark.
  10. Ludwigia

    An Echinoid

So, here's one for @FossilNerd A Clypeaster humilis from the Pleistocene deposits at Hurghada, Egypt.
  11. I thought I'd try my hand with this Kemmerer Cockerellites liops this time around. This took me a looooong time because of the fine differences in shading, but I'm pretty happy with it. As you can see when compare to the original photo, I cheated a bit on it by filling in the missing parts of the fins.
  12. Ludwigia

    A Crinoid

This time I've attempted a portion of a Scyphocrinites elegans crinoid plate which is a well-known and frequently available species from Morocco. I picked this one up for a song a couple of years ago. This took quite a while to complete.
  13. Ludwigia

    This time a bivalve

It's been a while since I posted my last fossil sketch since I've been practicing on other subjects like trees and flowers. But I've just returned to my original passion and have chosen to try to duplicate an Actinostreon marshii oyster. These guys make for interesting models because of their bizarre shapes. In German they are nicknamed Kamm-Muscheln, because they remind us of a rooster's comb.
  14. Ludwigia

    A Trilobite this time

I was asked recently by @Top Trilo when I would do a trilobite, so I decided to take up the challenge with this Hollardops mesocristatus from Morocco which I acquired a while ago. It's preserved in a somewhat concave position, which made for an interesting point of view.

    My first serious attempt

I used to like drawing when I was a teenager, but I've hardly done anything along that line since then. Now, having been inspired by Kane's artistic talent, I decided a while ago to pick up a couple of sketching methods and have spent the last month or so on and off practicing various techniques and trying my hand with things like apples, balls and vases. Last week I figured it was time to get down to something more up my line, so of course I picked out a nice ammonite which I wanted to attempt to reproduce on paper. No easy undertaking, I must say. They have a heck of a lot more shadows and shiny spots than the previously mentioned objects and reproducing a spiral is not as easy as it is with a ball. I didn't count the exact number of hours I spent creating this, but I must have had at least 10 sittings at the kitchen table averaging about an hour. Here it is. My first serious attempt at sketching: ...but seriously: And here's the original:
  16. dinosaur man

    dinosaur mans drawings

Since it’s winter and I can’t go fossil hunting until spring I have been drawing, so I made this to showcase my drawings instead of individually making topics like I did before. I just finished this one.
