I would rather identify most any fossil other than petrified wood! Not a botanist, so when I referred to my ancient copies of Gems & Mineral magazines from March to August of 1960 and read Virginia Page's "How to Identify Fossil Wood", I got lost in a hurry. I'm trying to identify wood from the Cretaceous in Southeast Missouri at Crowley's Ridge. I have a polished cross-section image and am hoping someone can identify it for my fossil database. I don't have a longitudinal section, but could do one if that is necessary.

Could this be a sponge? Note the radial structure and the occasional branching rods. Collected in Missouri, but location and age are unknown. Also, the specimen is sawn to 3/4" thick and the fossil doesn't extend into the sawn area! There is a lot of tiny crinoidal hash in the matrix rock. The light blue grid is one inch.

I found this in southeast Missouri in a layer of thick reddish clay in a transitional soil area with a light gray gravel.

Does anyone know, where are there some fossi collecting sites around Cape Girardeau? I live in Perryville and someone on here several months back said that there were some sites around Cape Girardeau, but I've no idea were. Please can someone help. Thank you
