    New Emoticons!

Hey guys, I just joined the site recently. I’m an artist and I’m gonna be working on some new emoticons for TFF! If anyone has suggestions for what they’d like to see, please let me know in the comments here and I will take them into consideration. Here are some examples of a few I have already made for fun: Thanks for your input!
  2. Mostly the title! I live in northern New Jersey- i’m aware that NJ used to be heavily submerged, and is host to many locations where you can find marine fossils such as ammonites, trilobites, and other small marine invertebrates- however, i have no clue as to how i can effectively search for and find fossils. I’ve gone to some dried river beds, dug in the banks, layered rock, and panned- but i realize that i dont quite know what i’m looking for. How do i determine if there is a fossil within a rock? How do i find good hunting locations? What are some of the key giveaways that a rock may contai
  3. Hello all!! I am a graduate student at Oregon State University, a geologist by trade, but a paleobotanist on the side (see my publication :https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1086/721261?journalCode=ijps). I am going to add to my Paleocene fossil plant collections, and am going to make a tour all around eastern Oregon. I will of course visit Fossil (again) for some more Bridge Creek Flora specimens, but do not personally know the area super well. Do any of you have any recommendations for plant fossil locations where I can legally collect? It would mean the world to me, I
  4. I want to go back to Peace River but I don't want to do the normal canoe outpost thing this time. I want to take a kayak south of Zolfo springs were the river gets bendy, shallow, and remote. I don't have a kayak so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for where I can rent one or if they want a hunting buddy for the second week of May.
  5. Hi guys! I am looking for new areas to hunt for rocks and fossils around the KC area. I have been to the Blue river, Kansas river, Cedar creek, Tuttle creek, Perry Lake, Mill creek, and abandoned quarry areas. Anyone have any general locations of where I can find some stuff? I am an avid hunter for all sorts of fossils and rocks (rockhounding is my favorite past time)! I've had the most luck at the Kansas river and Perry lake. Some of my finds include cow skulls, cone coral, shells, agates, vertebrae, and a bunch of druzy quartz geodes and chalcedony. I ha
  6. Hey there! We live in North FL and travel to Venice several times a year to visit family. I spend a good majority of my time in Venice hanging out at the beach with my kids, hunting for teeth and other fossils. We have such a good time and I would love to find some spots where I can take them to hunt for fossils closer to home. Anybody here have any suggestions? Preferably near the big bend area. Thanks!
  7. Hey all! Been a bit! BUT I've been pretty busy transitioning into a new career. And as such, I'm being forced to travel to Carlsbad, CA once a month. Does anyone have any recommendations on good hike trails where fossils can be found or beach area where decent shark teeth can be scouted out?! I lost the East Coast fun on the Chesapeake Bay and now I'm looking to get my hands dirty with those perfect weather folks on the West Coast! hahaha Appreciate it!

    Western US Ideas?

So my father and I want to go on a small trip to find some fossils. Looking to do a short trip 2-4 days in length around a weekend. We are from the north east so most of the formations that we have gone to are Silurian Ordovician or Devonian in age. We were hoping to take a trip to find some more varied types of fossils, one idea that I had was to go out west and look for some newer fossils, hopefully vertebrates and further more something terrestrial instead of the aquatic stuff we're used to out here (however fossil lake would be fun for the fish fossils). We both have passports so going to
  9. Today I want to talk about a problem that most people face when wanting to get a fossil at a lower price because of budget problem or what not, ... is it fake?, This is especially a problem on Auction Sites. When I was younger I thought if it said it was real it is real. I now know a bit more about fossils and how they can be faked to even fool scientists, so I guess you either have to scrape a bit of rock and try to expose a bit more of a fossil or get it X-rayed. I am no expert on fossil determination but I want you guys to give me some advice because I can usually only tell if
