    Summerville Tips

Hey guys, I'm going to be in Charleston here in a bit, just visiting family over the summer, and I would appreciate some help in finding good places in Summerville to hunt the creeks. I've had some success, but I'd like to narrow down my options some before I get out there. I am not asking anyone to surrender their honey holes, but I would like to know which areas of Summerville are topographically favorable for finding fossils. I've noticed that some creeks will be chock full of material, but a near-identical creek half a mile from it will be barren of fossils. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  2. Hello, since it is the holiday for me, I was wondering if anyone here knows about dinosaur fossil sites (or sites in Europe near France) that I could visit and be able to collect specimens from. As I know certain sites like Cherves de Cognac are closed, I want to make sure that I go to a site I am positive I can hunt in. Regards, indominus rex

    Tips for Fossil Education

Hi! I'll be teaching a group of kids about Geology this summer via 4H, and I'm looking for suggestions on activities/topics/etc that we can cover related to fossils. I'm planning for two meetings on fossils (one invertebrate and one vertebrate), with the rest covering a host of other geology topics. I have some general ideas, but I'm hoping to gather lots of suggestions. I'm mostly looking for ideas on different activities that we can do. I'll be bringing some of my personal collection for display, but I want this to be as hands on as possible (and yes, we will be doing field trips). Any sort of activity that will keep kids engaged.

    temecula CA

Greetings CA fossil fans! At the height of summer heat, I will be visiting Temecula CA for several days. Of course no one wants to give up their secret location for diamond inlaid nautiluses, but can you suggest must-see exposures to get an appreciation for that part of the country? Fossil or mineral collecting is a bonus but not a requirement! How about reading material for roadside wonder? Thanks for any tips.
  5. Does anyone have any tips on finding scleidosaurus fossils at charmouth? Is there a special way of defining them from the other rocks? Also do they show up under a uv torch like the ammonites from there do?

    Going to Mazon Creek! Tips?

Hey everybody, I'm planning on going to do a day's worth of nodule collecting at Mazon Creek in a few weeks with a buddy of mine. Any tips on where to go? Also, anyone know of a hotel that's reasonably close to where we can start collecting? Thanks for any and all tips!
  7. Hi all! I am new to the forum and relatively new to fossil collecting. I would like to try my hand at preparation, but am not sure where to start. It seems like purchasing mosasaur teeth still embedded in matrix and slowly working to get them out might be a good way to practice with cheap and easily obtainable fossils, but I do not know how to go about this. In my head I imagine purchasing a few 20-30 dollar teeth with matrix, chisels, and scribers to be a great and (relatively) cheap way to begin practicing various techniques that I intend use for the rest of my life, is there anything else I need to be aware of, or perhaps other recommended forms of practicing preparation and removal of fossils from rock for beginners with a plethora of patience/time? Hopefully this makes sense!

    Hunting at Eastbourne UK

Hi All, So haven't done any exploring or hunting since a brief weekend spent in Hastings in September last year (had a few small finds which are still waiting to be sorted) This is due to me being diagnosed and dealing with a genetic disorder which has mostly put me on my backside and I've been seriously lacking in learning more and actually getting out there on hunts. To cut a long story short, I'm feeling more myself and the flames as been reignited and I'd like to try to get back out there. I'm currently eyeing up Eastbourne and Beachy Head via Cow Gap. i was just wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on the location, I've already set about keeping an eye on the tide times as from what I've read it can be a it of a git of a location for getting cut off. looking at going the second weekend in February so will also keep a check on the weather. Any help is greatly appreciated Many Thanks The Complete Noob
  9. Hey y’all! Hubby and I have to go to NM this weekend to pick up our son, we’re looking to do a little hounding again. I’ll be researching on places to go in the Alamogordo area. I’m not looking for yalls special sites or anything, just maybe a little advice or idea of an area to look into going. I guess I should read up on the collecting laws there too huh
  10. Hi guys! I just got an epic keichousaurus fossil. Are there any tips you guys have with keeping it in shape? Is it ok for the fossil to be in the sun? Thanks! nick

    Tips?

Do you guys have tips for hunting for shark teeth in Northern VA and Southern MD? most of the beaches in VA either have no fossils or are private property. And I can't seem to find anything other than Calvert Cliffs and Purse State park that seem reliable in Southern MD. What are the best places to rent boats in Calvert and Purse? and are there reliable creeks and rivers that I can go to legally in Southern MD and Northern VA?
  12. Does anyone know how/where to get permission into mulbring quarry, NSW and if possible any contact information?

    Hello from Canada

Hello! My name is Nathan and I am from Ontario, Canada I always enjoyed looking for special rocks at beaches or along trails I walked; always hoping to stumble upon something shiny or a fossil(sadly luck wasn't on my side). I am a casual fossil finder who does not know any of the big names for these animals in rocks. My science teacher introduced this forum to me and showed off all the contests that she has won. I came to learn more about fossils and win a contest. I hope that this will be an enjoyable stay ^_^.
  15. This June I'm heading for a 50+ mile hike in the famous Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. Looking for a cool itinerary (route) to take, I searched through all the activities there. The 2 most exciting things I found were an Archaeological dig (sounds a lot like a hobby I have ) and a relatively recently discovered T.Rex footprint, currently the only one known to exist! Now that my curiosity is in full flight, I was wondering if there was anything else Paleontology regarding Philmont. With the presence of a T.rex track, the logical conclusion is there's some kinda Cretaceous formation there. Are there any others, older or younger? Would love to go see it!

    Chisel sharpening

Does anyone have any good tips for sharpening a chisel? Mine has recently grown dull from excursions to the local quarry for quartz. Any tips are appreciated!
  18. Me and my family are about to embark on a trip to Jekyll Island off the coast of Georgia. I am more keen on geology than paleontology so I honestly don't really know where to start I know the basics of the basics but would love a couple tips and maybe a few suggestions on where to look. Thank you so much!

    Fossil Hunting - Florida

Hi all, For us Europeans, Florida is a very exotic place. This may not be your view though, especially if you are from there (as many members here are). Anyways, I am really excited, because this winter (around x-mas) I will be going with my family to Orlando! (the hotel is less exciting: it's the Disney World one ). Anyways, we have a few days to go fossil hunting in one of the most fossiliferous regions in the world. We have already booked a trip with Fossil Voyages, owned by our very forum admin @Cris and his friend Kyle, which I'm sure will be a very exciting moment. But we have still a few extra days free for fossil hunting. We will surely go to the famous Peace River at some point, but having a few extra good hunting locations will be good. Though these may be, in your eyes, very basic/usual hunting locations, I am looking for your favorite hunting spots in Florida. So please jot down in the replies any good locations, and tips you have about them! Any info is welcome (Not too far from Orlando though, we don't want to spend the day in the car). Also, meeting up with some of you, and maybe even hunting with them, would be great too!!! I will, obviously, make some nice reports of the hunts afterwards. Thanks in advance, Max

    Big Brook Park Trip

Hi!! Planning to go to ,,,Big Brook Park in ,,,New Jersey for the first time! Any ,,,tips and or advice for a first timer and are there any special regulations that I need to follow?
  21. Hello, I am going fossil hunting in a stream called Big Brook in NJ. It's mostly a stream ankle high. So I was wondering where should I dig and sift to find the most fossils? Should I dig deep? Should I go where all the rocks are? Should I dig on land? Thanks.
  22. I want to preparing and cleaning fossils. And I tried to find great tools, but I can't. I want to buy air scribe and small drill(?). Can you tell me about what site I can buy those? +I live in South Korea.

Im new to fossil hunting ... help

So im new to fossil hunting, so much so that the security question about fossils to sign up on this site was too hard for me. *sigh*. I live in san antonio texas and literally have no idea on where to go, how to hunt, how to dig or where sites are located. I have tried looking some of this stuff up, but to no avail. The only fossils I have found are 4 texas heart clams/ deer heart clams. Even then my buddy Jeb found 3 of them while on a scout camp out. Can anyone help a future paleo out?
  24. So basically I'm planning on starting my journey of fossil hunting, but I have no idea what to look for. I live beside an inactive Quarry that I don't believe has ever been picked through for fossils before so it is an ideal place to start. I was just wondering if maybe you guys could post photos of things that I should keep an eye out for? So i can familiarize myself with different types of fossils. I will obviously know a fish when I see one but I also don't want to miss our on the small stuff due to my ignorance. I live outside of Ottawa in a rural area, so anyone who is familiar with this location would be a great help! I posted these in another topic but for anyone who hasn't seen them this is the quarry I will be going to. I want you to treat me as if i'm your child going hunting for the first time!
  25. I would like to share some pictures with you from my first hunt on microfossils. Hope, that you will help me to identify some of the fossils. Description: Gray clay with foraminifers. Bed of the river Losis, 100m from river Venta. J2 Callovian Sample taken in year 2005 Processing of the sample: First, I cut a small amount of clay from the sample (~35-50 gr.). This piece was then desintegrated with hydrogen peroxide(3%). Then I washed this sample, using 2 sieves (100 microns and 63 microns) for about half an hour. Both fractures (>100 and >63 microns) were separated between two envelopes for drying. Then sample dried for 2 days within the room temperature. Looking for fossils: I don't know, what I did incorrect, but after drying, sample solidified a bit, and I needed to grind it a bit with my hands. It seems, that not all clay went away from the sample. The color of remains still was dark grey. I am using a simple 20x-40x scope, and I saw, that sample is full of something, that reminded me fish scale. A lot of small, blinking pieces. For now, I have searched through only >100 micron fracture. A lot of interesting stuff was found there. I need to apologise for the quality of the pictures. I don't have a special scope camera, so I took some pictures with my phone through the scope. Some pics(pictures are large, so I include only links to them): 1) http://i.imgur.com/5rfKmss.jpg Here I separated those shells in two groups, because the group on the left is more yellowish. I think, this can be another species. I was trying to identify this using foraminifera.eu and it seems for me, that these can be some Lenticulina ? 2) http://i.imgur.com/u4ljqJv.jpg Could not find any one similar. Looks like what I see on the top of the shell are chambers without a top layer? Or this is some kind of special ornament? 3) http://i.imgur.com/MQw5BOb.jpg These looks like Discorbida ? 4) http://i.imgur.com/pOP6QWy.jpg Have not found any similar in "Key to species". 5) http://i.imgur.com/TzPH3OJ.jpg Also no idea. 6) http://i.imgur.com/7niz8hW.jpg Same story Some other photos of microfossils, that are only in 1 sample : http://i.imgur.com/LgTMDPR.jpg http://i.imgur.com/IRHw12P.jpg Thank you for your time reading this post. I hope to see some answers. If you have any tips or you see something, what I did wrong, please, advise me! I am just starting, but I really like micropalentology and I want to study!
