  1. Tetradium

    100_9117

From the album: Trilobites of Minnesota Decorah/Platteville/Galena Formation

This one specimen is a typical head - it is much more pointed. Then I accidently chopped a piece off and got a surprise.
  2. Tetradium

    100_9108

From the album: Trilobites of Minnesota Decorah/Platteville/Galena Formation

The first three pictures are Ectenaspis beckeri. I usually don't like to work on trilobites much because of their fragility and their 3d structures plus I don't know what tools that's available to use with it. How I came to the conclusions - it have continuous solid structures which means (edited Thorax) are missing from this specimen. The tip is missing and maybe parts of the head as well. It have a unusually elongated head and its (edited genal) spine appear to be curved. One theory I have is it is upside down. From Decorah formation. Don't know if its rare or uncommon as bottom half looks similar to others from the same family.
  3. Hello All. I am curious as to the groups assessment as to the authenticity of this Acadoparadoxides specimen from Morocco. It measures roughly 13 inches in length (the fossil itself). I see restoration of the right eye (as in right side of the photo) and right portions of the glabella, but beyond that am fairly hopeful/comfortable that the specimen is authentic. It is interesting that an upper thoracic segment is missing, but I am thinking this could be taphonomic or that segment was lost when the rock split. Anyway, I value any thoughts and input. I'm happy to share more photos as well. Thank you.

    Trilobite cheek?

Fossil forum, This is another fossil from the Leighton fm. I have just uncovered it, and at first thought it was a trilobite cheek. On closer inspection I realized that the external and internal mold are not smooth, but appear slightly porous. As well as this, the ridge appears too high in both molds. Any help on its id would be appreciated. Here are some pictures of it (internal mold on the left, external on the right):
  5. Hello All, I acquired a Odontocephalus fossil that would benefit from matrix removal (limestone) especially on the cephalon. I was hoping for some references in the US? Thank you very much! Wayne
  6. How do people prep trilobites in cross sections? Heres a picture i found. I really want to learn to prep trilobites in cross sections how do they know where the head and pygdium is?

  9. Greetings all. I'd like to post a link to a completed online auction that had an item that I believe members would find interesting. However the auction page is at that big auction site. Can someone tell me if such a post would run counter to the rules of the forum? It seems as if it might. But it's also can be a bit of a problem if I post images from the auction without permission of the seller. I believe the item is interesting enough that it would be worth members seeing. It was described as a native American paint cup found in CA. What makes it of such interest on TFF is that it was supposedly, and possibly, made from a trilobite fossil. So it is a fossil and an artifact. And while the formations in that area wouldn't "naturally" hold fossils of that age, it does look like it may be a trilobite fossil. There is what looks to be a partial multi-lens eye present. Before seeing that I was thinking more along the ammonite lines. I am too inexperienced to make such a call. So is it a bad thing to post the link to the completed auction? If so, I won't do it. I don't know either the buyer or the seller, FWIW. Thanks. EDIT: PHOTOS ONLY:
  10. Hi everyone, I got this rather nice looking Metacanthina recently as a present as well as some other trilobites (which have sadly turned out to be clear fabrications after some research, clear bubbles etc.) This one looked more convincing and I have gone over it with a magnifying glass but couldn't see any details various websites told me to look out for. Was wondering if someone with more experience could spot anything suspect! There is a crack along the matrix and on the rear of it's right eye some lens detail can be seen. Thanks thumbnail (1).jfif thumbnail (2).jfif thumbnail (3).jfif thumbnail.jfif

    Russian trilobite ID's?

Now that I'm getting more of my fossils out of storage I have a few more to request ID's for. I've had these for over 17 years, last 15 boxed away. Here I have 3 Russian trilobites for your consideration 1 2 3 Thanks again Steve
  12. Is this trilobite real? How often have we seen this question? Since folks are often asking I thought I'd toss in this obvious fake that I got in a bulk rock buy years ago. I'm no pro but I couldn't even find any real parts of this thing. I'll point out what I see and others can add their ideas Here is overall from top Here is closer shot of the front showing a few big problems. 1: the crack running around the side of the trilobite shows where the fake bug is separating from the base. They take a chunk of matrix, carve out a hole then glue on a molded fake. Then glue on powdered rock to cover the glue lines. 2: there are no details on this trilobite. They didn't even try to fake the eyes. The body is painted on. And here you can see the bubble holes from the resin / plaster used to mold the whole thing. And again, no detail what so ever. The fossil is very, very rough. No smooth lines, everything looks chisled in. Another thing to look at, when looking at the matrix overall, there is no repaired crack thru the matrix. These trilobites (like most Moroccan trilobites) are found by breaking chunks of rock looking for the black/brown lines of the trilobite shell. Then the rock is marked where the fossil is and glued back together. They then prep down to the trilobite. So, a repaired crack running thru the fossil is very common. Even though this is a bad fake I'm keeping it to use for showing what to look out for.
  13. So I was wondering how one goes about determining if a species of trilobite had lateral flexibility. That is, could wiggle side to side. I’m aware this is a rare quality that you get in like those Olenellus boys, but can’t find how it’s determined to be a trait of the animal as opposed to geological warping. Is there a part of the morphology that gives it away? Or is it just from finding enough intact specimens that were frozen mid wiggle?

    Trilobite buy??

Bought a couple Trilobites from different dealers in Quartzsite Arizona. Hoping to get better info then what I was given. One has a faded label, the other nothing. First one supposedly came from an old collection and has an old label stating "Astropyge, Alnif Morocco. Size 1.5 inch 2nd one has no information. Know its from Morocco (at least very sure) Size 2 inches I know they're not perfect but at least from what I could tell they both look real. They both have decent eyes. Thanks for looking
  16. While visiting family in Arizona and California I was able to figure out where the Marble Mountains trilobite quarry was located. It's not that far off the road system so I figured I'd give it a look see on my drive from central Arizona to Northern California. The location is only about 25 miles out of my way so why not. On my drive north I only had a few hours so this stop was mostly a fact finding trip. The view from the car windshield. The Marble Mountains are the lower hills to the left of center. The quarry area is just to the left of the gap between hills Ok, word of notice...... I DO NOT recommend driving a mustang here. I know my car and have driven many places I shouldn't hehehe. I had to stop about 1/4 mile from the site. Don't need a 4x4 but a little ground clearance is a big help. The road is a bit rocky but that is to be expected. It's about 1.5 miles from pavement to parking area. The site is just below the gray outcrop just to the left of the mountain gap. I arrived just before sunset and found some locals already at the site (you can just make out their truck in middle photo). They gave me some pointers on what to look for as they were leaving and I set to work. For the first hour I was mostly just wondering around seeing what I could see. There were no obvious recent diggings so I was gonna have to do some digging myself. Went back to the car, grabbed a headlight and went to search in the dark. After about 3 hours I packed up and left to continue my drive north. 5 days later I was on my way south back to Arizona. I stopped for a full day of digging this time. Kinda got the basics of the site during this stop. Then back on my way. A week later I was able to slip away for a full 3 day trip just to dig. I was able to spend some quality time on site. It is not a site that you can really hit well in a short time. to be continued......

    A common but nice trilobite

Hello All, I wanted to share my new trilobite, it is a common yet in my opinion a nicely preserved one. It is Ellipsocephalus hoffi , from the Middle Cambrian found in Litavka River valley, Czech Republic. It is much different than the other Moroccan and Russian trilobites I own, this one I read is blind and lived on the sea floor where it was relatively dark, very cool! Here is the specimen: If you have any E. hoffi to share, then please do so.

    UTAH trilobite?

Hello All, I wonder if this trilobite is the common kingii, or is it another species? I believe it must be a trilobite from Utah, but my knowledge is still small. Thank you for taking a look!

    Trilobite or Brachiopod Impression?

Wondering whether this is a trilobite or brachiopod impression. (Hoping its a trilobite.) Found it in a spoil heap at a small outcrop across from Gore Grocery Store, Gore, VA. Outcrop is Devonian in age. Anybody know what formation it is?

    Nevada Trilobite ID

I’ve recently bought these trilobites from the Chisholm shale in Nevada, and I was looking for an ID on the two of them. They are Cambrian in age, and more specifically from Lincoln County.
  22. Hi again! I figured since you were all so helpful with the fake trilobite that'd I would show you the mosa tooth I bought from the same seller. How does this look? It hasnt arrived yet so this picture came from the seller. Then as a bonus, this is the trilobite I'm thinking of getting to replace the fake I'm sending back. This one has to be real right?
