Well I started my next project tonight, and compared to the last one, this one is so much fun (so far ). The rock is softer and it also peels off the shell beautifully. Things are going to get a bit more complicated I can see already as there is a thick layer of powdery calcite around the edges. I originally thought it was shell and I’d stripped off the shell the whole time But I checked with the scope and it’s calcite. Some before pictures. The concretion is 24 cm (9.5 inches) wide. The claws were already exposed like this, I found it wedge

I have my first good scribe but have been so busy I've only really worked on my "sanity crab" Anyway - to all you beginners - dont do what I did - just commit. I started with an electric engraver, then I got a CP 710 engraver and now I have a 9361 clone - It ROCKS! Here is my new victim... I honestly thought it would fight me but I was surprised... I'll give it a few more hours...

How big do fossil crabs get? Some large Tumidos
Doctor Mud posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Having found my biggest crab yet, I was very curious about how big the Tumidocarcinus giganteus gets. It sure lives up to the species name giganteus! @Dave (POM) Allen has found a massive claw, the biggest I’ve seen. Could be from a huge crab too, but I’ve seen some really massive claws that are way out of proportion with the crab. I’ll have to dig out the photo from my computer when I’m home, but I have an amazing example of this. The Canterbury museum has the biggest specimen - complete crab I’ve seen There it is near some normal sized (but st- 18 replies

Newly prepped Tumidocarcinus Giganteus crab, collected by myself
mamlambo posted a topic in Member Collections
I found a really good concretion a few months ago here in New Zealand and didn't want to try prep it myself as I am still very much a beginner. Luckily, @DLB was willing to help me out and did an amazing prep job - both sides! It's by far the best crab in my collection, and very well travelled after it's 24 000km (15 000mi) flight It measures 16cm (6.25") across. I made a video of me finding it, sending it off, and opening it which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4cqpVKsOO0 Thanks for the amazing prep job @DLB!- 13 replies

It was 2 or 3 years ago right here on The Fossil Forum when guy posted a picture of this crab concretion and I got sooooooo excited that I had to message him and ask him if we could make a deal. yWell, we did make a deal, and its been sittin in my garage since then. Ive looked at it many, many, many times and was always scared to get started on it. Well,, today, I brought it out again and took a really good look at it. and yes, i was scared all over again! I could not read ventral or dorsal for the life of me just like all the other times ive looked at this thing ! Being a very big con

Got home from the Quartzite show on monday and was sick as a dog. Made for a brutal 2 day drive home! But today, feeling a bit better and finally went out to the prep garage. Picked out two small Tumido concretions and decided to do one Ventral and the other Dorsal. I had a lot of fun doing that ventral Pulalius so I decided I needed a ventral Tumido. Anyways, the one I decided ventral on was an easy read and after a few hours hit ventral. Put that one aside and went on the prep attack on the other. Was'nt positive on what was ventral/dorsal so dug a hole. Dang!!! Ventral again! Tu

Ok, tired of working on the fossil crabs from Washington and decided to start a Tumidocarcinus gigantius from New Zealand today. Took most of my prep day. I could not read what was ventral or dorsal, so just went ahead and scribed a hole. It was just a guess and I had a 50% chance of gettiing it right, but no,,, Wrong!!! Once I hit ventral I turned it over and started again. Once I hit crab carapace on the other side I then turned it over and fixed the hole on the ventral side. A two part apoxy putty and then rolled it around some of the dust and rock from the prep and it came out purty

Arighty then. Received a big package yesterday in the mail from New Zealand. I thought for sure someone would know that I was getting fossil crabs in my other posts about 'Another Mystery Fossil'? But anyway, here they are. Ive got one huge rock, (11 inches across), that was split in half by mother nature and one small 4 inch rock that I started prepping today. I still have to figure out exactly what im gunna do with the 'split rock' and then go on the prep attack, but thats gunna take a few days. The really good thing is, this split rock crab just might be an eight legger with all ti

Hey guys, I've been sitting on this one for a few months, it looked like an easy one so I was saving it as a reward for something... After catching up with RJB's posts I was re-motivated so I got back to the crying crab and made progress so I started on this little feller. As I'd hoped - it is not a sticky one so far, I'm sure the concrete will darken as I go deeper, but I'm having fun! Time for a break - oops that was a few hours I didnt really have spare...
