My girlfriend is wine tasting her way through Italy for a few weeks. Tough gig huh? Anyways, today she’s in Tuscany and the winery she was at had a display and story of how the soil was very fossiliferous. No listing of geological age and the server there didn’t know much more either. She wasn’t sure which area of Tuscany she was in and the geologic maps I looked up seemed to run anywhere from upper cretaceous on. She managed to talk them out of one of their display pieces for me, with a fairly good sized wine order no doubt! She only sent this one photo, and they packed it with her wine to ship, so I don’t have a lot to go by until I have it in hand. It’s an interesting rock and kind of has the look of some Schist like formations I’ve seen her in the states. I can kind of imagine possible shell imprints in a few places but not sure. Or could the whole piece be fossil? Not sure. Any guesses or illumination would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dear All, I found this in Tuscany 2 days ago, being used as a hearth stone for a fire in a field. Given its Tuscany and its odd shape I guess its marine. Please excuse the poor attempt at dyeing it. Very grateful if anyone has a clue what it is, I have looked at a number of sites and drawn a blank. Its approximately 7 cms wide at the base and 7.5 cms tall. Many thanks, Miles.

Hello forum, while i was metal detecting a field, i have found a "natica" peep out from a clump of dirt. It seems has many light-brown spot all over the shell and a large navel canal. Considering the plus common specimen of Naticidae that are my area, what's the correct genus:Naticarius or Notocochlis, the fly-specked moon snail or the tiger moon snail? To you the hard judge. Thanks! PS: "natica" in in italiano it means "buttock" Davide

Hi forum, i'm Davide, i'm 17 years old. I'm italian, more precisely i came from Tuscany. When i use to go out with my metal detecting, i often have found a lot of fossil "shells" . as you will have understood i'm a archaeology amateur, appassionate of every object that have got a history . Thus, i want to share some of them, specially for ID's and discover the interesting world of paleontology. It's time to learn something about this beautiful and, imho, underestimated science. If you are asking about my nickname,i't because i love David Bowie, the singer! I'm happy for being registered to this, i hope, fantastic family.
