Hello Everyone, I found this fabulous rock which is chock full of brachiopods on the bank of the Tennessee River today. When I first broke it open, the brachiopods were all relatively intact. Unfortunately, several split and/or started crumbling off while I was trying to gently clean off some of the river grime. I’m hoping someone can tell me the simplest way to go about cleaning/preserving these brachiopods with the least damage? Thanks!

Hello! Just found this forum, happy to join. I’m a geologist who does environmental work in Texas, mostly Beaumont Formation. I don’t do much work with rock but I got an opportunity to drill in Alabama and took it. Luckily this happened to be in my core. We’re drilling in the Tuscumbia Limestone which I understand to be Mississippian. Hoping someone can help me identify this fossil. Let me know if you know what I’ve got here, and I’d love tips for cleaning it up for display. Thanks!

Hello, I found this rock in Alabama (Mississippian/Tuscumbia Limestone) and have been trying to figure out what is all over it. After searching the forum and the internet, the closest match I could find is it possibly being a stromatoporoid, showing mamelons? If not, can anyone tell me what it might be? (My husband says it looks like melted plastic to him. I’m really hoping he isn’t correct. Lol) Thanks!

While out fossil hunting in Alabama (Mississippian/Tuscumbia Limestone) earlier this week, I found a hash plate full of crinoid stem segments which also has a small fossil on it which I cannot identify. Is it a bryozoan?

My husband and I decided to go on a quick fossil hunt this morning. The area is Mississippian/Tuscumbia Limestone. I was delighted to find this small, square chunk of rock right away. It almost appears to be a shadow box for the lovely little fossil embedded within it. I am wondering if it is a tentaculite?

I’m hoping someone can tell me which type of fossil(s) are in this? Bryozoan? Brachiopods? It looks different from the brachiopods I found in Tennessee. I was inordinately pleased to find this little rock while my husband was building our deck, as this is the first fossil I have found in my yard since our move to Alabama. Woo-Hoo! (Mississippian, Tuscumbia Limestone)
