What is this fossil? I am inexperienced but suspect it is a bone. Tusk? :)
Longskip posted a topic in Fossil ID
Hello everyone, this is my first post so I hope I'm doing this properly. Some months ago I was visiting family in Ohio and we went fossil hunting, which is a popular activity there. Here are the details: Location found: Lebanon, Ohio (in a small riverbed) Dimensions: Height: 3.8cm Width: 2.6cm I don't have a scale to weigh it, but it is heavy the way a stone of its size would be. (I know that's a terrible way to describe the weight but I can't think of what to compare it to) It also passed the "tongue test" which I read about during my research about fossil identification. At first I thought perhaps it was a mastodon tusk segment. I read online ice age era fossils have been found in the area I was at due to it being glaciated. Thank you all so much for reading and for helping. I am completely inexperienced and uneducated in paleontology, but I am very interested. Cheers! -
Found these two near the peace river wondering if anyone could tell me what they are? I have some guesses but just wanted to make sure, the first I think is some kind of whale tooth and the second could be some kind of tusk but not sure.

A family friend passed away and left me his rock, mineral, and fossil collection. Much of it was labeled, but there were several boxes of odds and ends that I’ve been working to identify. I believe this is fossilized bone. Tusk? This was in a box marked “Alaska.” 15cm long. 10cm wide. 11-18mm thick. Any ideas of what this might be?

When I first decided to picked this piece up I thought it was just an interesting looking chunk of petrified wood, but when I grabbed it, it felt and looked weirdly light and fragile. I pulled it out of the bag for cleanup today and noticed what looked like faint schreger lines. Pictures in the daylight made the lines look clearer, though it's hard for me to make out exactly how they run.

It’s lighter in weight than I would expect for a tooth of that size. Found in the Peace River in Wauchula, Florida. Thanks.

Hi, there! I’m so impressed by this forum. You all have given such good directions for how to post. Fingers crossed that I dotted all of my i’s and crossed all of my t’s. I purchased this at a local auction as part of a larger lot labeled “Rocks”. Auction was in Eastern Nebraska near Freemont. I would be so grateful for any insights as to what this is. — gtdkate

Hello one and all! This unknown fossil was part of a large group of fossils I purchased a few years back. I wondered if anyone might be able to tell me a bit more about this tusk like fossil I have posted as I have limited knowledge of such items. The fossil measures just about 7" inches long and the weight is 12.5 ounces. Thank you in advance.

I have had this piece of heavy bone for a couple of weeks and have been trying to come up with an ID before putting in the unidentified category. It was found in the Peace River, FL. When I picked it up I found it to be very solid and heavy. It has a curvature/roundness to it similar to what I have found in pieces of tusk, along with what looks like an outer ring of "bark". The ends show no sign of Schreger lines to indicate ivory. It also has the honeycomb type look on the inner side that one would expect from bone. I haven't been able to find anything to compare it to. Overall it measures 168 mm long x 104 mm wide x 45 mm thick or 6 1/8" x 3 7/8" x 1 5/8". The width tapers to 65 mm and the thickness tapers to 22 mm at the smaller end. It also appears to curve slightly as it tapers. Could it be some type of horn? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks !

Found this specimen in an area of the Peace River where I have found partial Mammoth, Mastodon & Gomp teeth. Also have found a small piece of fossil ivory nearby. I think this latest find is a piece of a tusk. Any input from those with more experience would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi All- I found these along a beach in California...any ideas what they might be? They look different than the whalebone fossils that I've found. The larger one weighs about 7 pounds and I'm wondering if the thin lines might be Schreger lines? (I'd rather not cut the specimen to see if a chevron pattern shows inside) Thanks! Cena
