Hi, started fossil hunting around August, as my collection grows and I find rarer interesting things I'm starting to think about real preparation, most pro's out there charge around £25 an hour I believe, so possibly around £150 for a decent sized ammonite, I'm pretty hands on and used to be an upholsterer so think would be good at it (hopefully) Now I'm looking at Ken Mannion pens (ST) and a small compressor (24litre) 2.5hp) You think I could get going with these as paying someone else to prepare over and over would be costly and I do like exposing fossils myself, thanks... Alan

Hi all, I hope it is ok to ask this here. I am sorting all our stuff out as moving abroad (from UK) and have this little box which I presume are some sort of fossils inside. Any help on what they are would be great, thank you. I presume the fossils are from the UK, sorry I have no more info, also why they would have numbers stuck on them?

Hi. I found this in West Yorkshire, UK in the Pennine Lower Coal Measures formation (upper Carboniferous). It is in a Marine concretion. It contains what I think is a Phyllocarid but when I was looking at it today I noticed a Tully monster shape. I'm 99% sure it's just a fracture in the rock rather than anything interesting but I decided to post some pictures here just to be sure. Thanks, Daniel

Out hunting today in Whitby UK, having a lovely walk in the nice weather but finding nothing, literally back to the end ready to go back to car and this was lying between rock's, had a look and seen the nice gold keel sticking out, usual trick would be hammer blows to side to expose but I'm learning to be patient... prep pen is the way, cheers. Alan.

Was out hunting today and noticed a concretion under a large chunk of shale, had a peek and noticed the Ammonite, I've looked in books and online but can't really ID it as most the spiked ammonites are a lot thicker, have yet to open it as don't want to mess any of the spikes up as they do look delicate, I don't have a prep pen yet as I'm still pretty new to this, you think worth having it prepped or open it up carefully ? Was found on Yorkshire coast near Whitby, thanks... Alan

Hi there, researching on behalf of my son. We found this on a beach at the Isle of Wight and wondered if it is Coprolite? and if so, any ideas what dinosaur might have made it. It's not dissimilar in shape and size to sheep poo. Thanks for your help

Opened up a decent sized nodule to find this ammonite, not the usual I would come across and with nice markings, sadly the outer part had been crushed but managed to free the inner, I will remove the matrix from the centre later, I believe it could be an Oxynoticeras but not sure, any ideas ? Thanks.

Hi all! For the holidays, I am enjoying a nice relaxation at my grandparents house in Middelburg (NL). We were planning on hunting at Kaloot for sharkteeth and seashells, unfortunately the bad weather prevented it . My grandma, being a sculptor (Hanneke Beaumont, if you're interested in sculpture you might know her), brought me to her atelier today for me to make something myself. I had already made a few things a few years back, so the material wasn't very new to me. 1) an Euoplocephalus in its habitat 2) an Acrocanthosaurus resting its head on a tree (because its head is too heavy ) Today, I wanted to make something new, so I decided, after a bit of brainstorming, to make a re-creation of what Lyme Regis (UK) looked like 200 million years ago, basing my idea on the fossils from the Blue Lias formation found there (ammonites, belemnites, coral, fish, marine reptiles, etc). I am using this picture for ideas on the background. I am nowhere near finished, as for now I have only worked on it for one morning. I am planning on finishing it though as quickly as possible. This is what I have done till now: Sorry for it being wet, but I had to make it wet so that it wouldn't dry up immediately. The big lumps are meant to represent rocks on the seafloor, and the tubes plus the othe thing are meant to be coral. In the middle lies an ammonite shell half-buried in the sand. Detail on the ammonite: Detail on the corals: I am going to add still a small Dapedium fish, a big ammonite and a big belemnite, then add a few more small details. I will return this afternoon and tomorrow morning, and will of course keep you updated of the progress! I hope the end result will be good! Best regards, Max

I was recently asked by Forum member Carl who works at the American Museum of Natural History if I would be interested in trading some Carboniferous shark teeth I have collected in Scotland which he would put straight into the fish collections at the museum. (For which he would trade for Mesozoic and Cenozoic teeth from the US). I was delighted at the opportunity and was just going to donate some specimens to the museum but Carl has sent me some beautiful teeth from his personal collection in return for them, thanks again Carl! The teeth I donated are all from a freshwater deposit of Westphalian A age of the British Coal measures and were collected from the spoil heaps of two long closed collieries in the county of Fife. I will post photos of the rest of them in the donations gallery but here's a couple of the more interesting specimens: Ageleodus pectinatus. (labial view)

Hi, was out hunting and climbed up some banks/cliffs to have a little look, came across this, was going to discard it so chipped off the end to have a look (which looked similar to a ball joint) and thought looked a bit boney, I think it's just some layers of rock/sand myself but wanted your opinions before I binned it, cheers.

I found this strange fossil on the Durham coast foreshore in the north of England, an area know for its underlying Permian formation. It looks and feels different to other fossils I have found in the area (mostly crinoid stems). I was just wondering if anyone could give an identification if possible.
