Having returned from a lovely vacation to Florida, I have examined some fossils that were brought back with me. There are always unknowns in my collection , but year by year I require less and less assistance in IDing finds!!! This year, I am down to these five: 1. A large bone with odd joint surfaces. Not sure of the owner and not sure what bone I am looking at! 2. A tooth that was fractured. Gator? The reason for thinking of the ridge running down the tooth in the first picture. The 2nd pic is of the fractured surface. 3. Odd looking bone. Again the owner of this bone and location of it eludes me. Navicular bone from some form of horse??? 4. Turtle foot pad? Initially I thought it was just a rock, but then I noticed the crease in the upper part of the first picture. 5. This one has me totally stumped. Texture of bone but looks like a molar with roots and a depression on the opposite side. Maybe nothing.

Last week, we had the opportunity to visit the eastern parts of North Carolina guided by a local resident (my brother!!). A great time was had by all. Scenery is spectacular!!!!. We not only relaxed on the beach but we went shelling and fished. Wildlife was everywhere. From wild horses on the barrier islands to the birds. The dolphins were my favorite. I was hoping that the hurricane which recently brought large waves to the beach, may have brought in some fossils too. Such was not the case. So our group of one fossil hunter (me) and three novices that were neutral on looking for fossils set off to an inland site that I had researched prior to a earlier visit last year. When I was at this site previously, I came up with a goose egg, and it was NOT a fossil. So my expectations were pretty low. The site was along the Neuse River as seen in this picture. Most of our finds were in amongst the reeds and tree stumps. I think the beach area had been picked clean by other visitors.
