    Need a little more help

We found this today and have been trying to figure out what it could be. I'm guessing it may be some kind of tooth or tusk I'm sure someone will be able to ID it. It was found snorkeling at the beach near Venice Florida.

    Also horse?

This tooth was found diving off of Venice - we also found this nice, full horse tooth (in the background). The one I'm holding seems so much bigger than a usual horse tooth - could it be from some different mammal?

    New from Florida

Hey all! I've been doing this about a year and I have been very busy since moving down here to Florida, spending a lot of time in the river and beach. I'm trying to catalogue everything now, and there are SO many I was hoping to ask about in the Fossil ID section, not being able to find much information, and you are all so knowledgeable I hope to gain some skills with my own identification process. I think I've pretty much gotten all the shark's teeth down, so it's mostly reptile and mammal bones and fossils I'd be posting. What's the best way to go about featuring many photos in a thread? Attachments or...? Hope to have a lot of interesting stuff to show! (The pic is my best meg, found around Veteran's Park in Arcadia.)
  4. Here are my most recent finds from a trip out to Venice Beach. I found a large variation of color of sharks teeth and bone fragments. I also found a small piece of what appears to be some type of equine tooth, a small unknown possibly reptilian tooth, a vertebra, and some other odds and ends. This beach has a very wide variation of fossils and we had a great time hunting. A big thanks goes to JCBShark for lending some gear and giving me a piece of meg to take to my daughter! She was thrilled.

    Bone or tooth?

We found this in the surf at Casey Key today. About 3" long and very heavy. Any ideas what it might be?

    Disney trip in March

My family and I are taking a trip to Disney March 25_ April 1. One day will be spent at Venice beach. This will be the only day I will be able to hunt shark teeth on this trip. I would like to make it as successful as possible. So any tips or advice for this location would be much appreciated. I plan on getting a sifter while I'm down there. Would snorkeling be worthwhile? Also is there areas where collecting tends to be better. I wish I could go to the Peace, but that will remain a dream for now. Thank-you Dave
  7. Hi everyone I am new to the forum and just got back Saturday from the Ernst Quarry for Shark Teeth here in California. Headed to Florida on the 15th to hunt fossils. Would love to find a Meg but the adventure is what is fun! Any suggestions where to go between the 15 th and the 20th would be greatly appreciated. Plan on heading to Venice for a day and then the Peace River. Thanks ahead of time. Here is a picture of my finds from Sat. Mike

    Central Floridian

Long time reader, first time poster. Been going to Venice Beach since I was a kid in the 80s. Finally hit the Peace River for the first time today. Feel like I've finally learned enough from the boards here to decipher an acorn from a fossil.

    Florida part 1

My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful Florida vacation (actually a continuing education trip). I will use my next 4 posts (Florida 1,2 3, and 4) to help the Florida Division of Tourism persuade northerners/snowbirds to arrange for a vacation here. Florida 1 involves the beaches around Venice Florida. Beautiful! I had a preference for Caspersen Beach, an undeveloped stretch of beach that allows one to see Florida as it may have been before human alterations. Wildlife was plentiful, people were not. My favorite animals were the tortoises that roamed the interior of the narrow island. Most enjoyed a photo op. This one however was a bit shy! For spouses that do not have an interest in fossils this Florida beach provides great shelling or a relaxing place for some sun and a good book or just gawk at the idiots screening for sharks teeth. I was definitely not the only one! However, since this is the fossil forum, I must talk about what is available at Caspersen Beach. The interior of this barrier island is replenished with fossiliferous material, different than what washes up on the beaches. Unfortunately, collecting is NOT allowed here but the tortoises excavate new material daily for all to see and enjoy! I saw a variety of shells and some sharks teeth. I also saw where people have dug massive holes and not reclaimed the dig sites. I am sure this was a big reason for disallowing collecting. As for the beach, fossil material does wash up here and is collectable and keepable. I strongly suggest a sifting utensil to screen through the beach deposits. Walmart sells sand flea rakes for $18.00. Beach shops are more expensive A good investment to assure a pocket full of teeth goes home with you. I had made a screening device at home and packed it in my suit case. It DID significantly outperform flea rakes when the tide was low. Here I am using my home made screen. Floats did not work well with the ocean waves. However the rake worked better in higher water. A typical collection with the sand flea rake: Notice that I spread the material in the rake on the beach where the very last bit of wave can wash and spread the contents enough to allow easy pickings of the teeth. I focused my collecting to the little (1 foot) drop off at the deeper side of the shell wash. In other words, if one slowly walks out into the ocean, you will feel a shelly layer at your feet. Then a sudden small drop off occurs and you now feel a sandy bottom. This change in depth and content was my most productive layer to collect from. So when the tide is high, The log handle of the flea rake allows me to collect without submerging my body using my home made screen. And in February, the ocean is cool even for me. When screening, one never knows what might show up as evidenced here.
  10. I'm taking some time off work and making a road trip down to Florida at the end of the month. I'll be trying to hit several sites along the way but will be in the Venice area sometime between these dates. I'll be doing some shore diving in the mornings if anyone is interested in joining me. I generally dive solo but having the company is nice on those long swims to and from shore. I have a fair amount of experience with these dives so if you have experience or not, you're more than welcome to join. Daniel

    Teeth teeth teeth :)

So my shark teeth collection has grown quite a bit this month. All found in Sarasota-Venice, a lot were found when I was a child, so about 25 years ago. My mom had saved them and just gave them to me. Some were found in the past couple of months.. this is just a few of them I thought might be identifiable. I plan on making some jewelry and I would love to know what they are for sure.. I need to get a good book. I'm sorry I forgot to put something next to them for scaling, it was hard to get a couple of pictures because my son kept pulling them down and putting them on his teeth LolThanks..

    Casperan Beach, FL finds

Hi guys! It's been a while since I've posted here but I wanted to share some of the things we found yesterday out at the beach I know that I have a lot of teeth & stingray parts, but I'm not sure about some of these other bones.. anyone able to make some IDs here? The non-fossil bones were discovered by my husband and he said he thinks they are from a dolphin. I'm interested in finding out info for the photo with 9 items, the brown thing in the center is about one inch for scale. Thanks!

shark teeth- one old, one new

Hi guys, I am hoping someone can ID at least one of these! I posted the larger one in a group the other day but I figured I might have better luck with these pics! If someone can ID either of these I would appreciate it! Thanks!

    Super duper day :)

Made an impromptu trip to Venice today.. Managed to pick up a couple of teeth, even though there were a lot of people collecting.. any ideas?
  15. I will be in the Tampa and Venice area 10/26 -11/1. My husband is not really a water guy so I was wondering about any club trips or options to go on a fossil hunting trip on land. Any help would be much appreciated. Please PM if you'd like to keep info private. thanks so much!

ID help please - Caspersen, FL

Hi all, this is my first post! I found these on Caspersen beach, Florida - any clues as to what they may be? My newbie instincts say the brown one may be dugong rib bone and the black one a whale vertebrae? Thanks for any helpful replies!
  17. Any ideas what animal? Appears to be bone. Found on beach on Manasota Key FL. Measures 3" wide by a tad over 2.5 wide, about 1/2" thick. Appears to have part of edge broken off in one area but then worn rounded as other edges. Also note 2 marks (indentions) Could these be bite marks? Could this be from a vertebra? Learning so much on TFF and enjoying so much!
  18. Hey guys, I was planning to go to Peace River, but the water levels are average so fossil hunting may not be good. Venice is always a good alternative spot so I was thinking if Venice Beach would be better. So Should I go to Venice or Peace River? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  19. http://imgur.com/a/avRfx I'm mostly curious of what kind of shark the tooth belonged to! Found it last weekend at Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida. The biggest tooth I've found so far in 3 weeks of hunting. Hopefully some of you can help identify the other items. • Pictures 1-11 were all found on Caspersen Beach, Venice, Florida. • Pictures 12-15 location found is unknown. • Pictures 16-18 the fossil came from river-rock transported from an unknown location. The potential bone in picture 5-7 has a concave surface, sort of like a ball joint. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
  20. Hello all, I find myself heading to Florida for a week in the middle of June for non-fossil related stuff (Boooo!). However, I plan on sneaking away and squeezing out two days worth of diving at Venice Beach while I'm in Florida. I found two main charters: Florida West Scuba and Charters and Aristakat Charters They both go out on the same days, similar time, same general area, and have similar prices. Has anyone used either of these charters before? I'm not sure which on to book. Does anyone have any recommendations or comments about either one? Thanks! Jayson http://www.fossilguy.com

    Mako Arrowhead/point?

Hello, I wanted to get fellow fossilers thoughts on a mako tooth I found in the Venice boneyard back in 2009 while doing a dive with Florida West Scuba. The mako tooth was broken and encrusted in coralline algae (see 1st pic below). It was my first tooth dive and at the time I was not familiar with coralline algae and did not realize it was a shark tooth. I grabbed it thinking it looked like an arrowhead. When I got back to the boat, Captain Steve asked what I found, and I told him I think I found an arrowhead. He gave me a funny look and asked to see it. He told me it was a mako tooth (Note: the tooth is broken/altered and still measures 2/12 inches), and seemed fairly certain it was manmade into an arrowhead. I even overheard him telling Marie (diving guide on the boat) he really wanted the tooth and she commented that he must have something in the shop he could trade for it. I posted a couple "no so good" pics on a scuba forum, but got some mixed reviews. So I decided to take a couple new pics to see what people here thought about the tooth possibly being made into an arrowhead or maybe a point. Thank you for your thoughts! F.Y.I. I wish I would of left the coralline algae on the tooth, it looked much "cooler" to me.
  22. I went to Venice beach expecting to only find Fossil sharks teeth(which seems kinda silly now) but when I got there I found an array of other fossils like petrified wood, sting ray barbs and teeth, turtle shell pieces, etc. It's not very crowded on the week days and there's tons of wildlife too, so I'd certainly recommend taking a trip there
  23. Hey everyone, I have a few trips lined up in the next few months and just wanted to share so that I could maybe get some advice, or just hear some success stories from others who have hunted the same places. My first trip will not actually be in 2012 (but close enough). I'll be heading to Gainesville for a day trip to do some hunting in the creek. I'll need the most advice for this trip because I am completely unfamiliar with the area. I know that the main creeks (Possum, Rattlesnake, etc) are mostly picked over so it is best to search in creeks 'off the beaten path'. I guess any advice for a starting point would be much appreciated. My next trip in early Feb is to a phosphate mine in Hardee county. I cannot believe I finally found a way into one of these mines! Hopefully I'll be lucky enough to at least find one decent meg. Has anyone else been fortunate enough to make their way into one of the Central FL mines? I'd like to hear how it was and what you found. I'll be trying to hit Venice for some diving throughout the Spring. Can't get enough of that place! Hope to get some feedback. I can't wait to find some megs!
