  1. Hello! I bought this piece of petrified wood the other month. The seller was unable to provide any specificities to the fossil. I was hoping that anyone could shed some light on the specificities on this petrified wood (i.e. Location, Age, Species). Appreciate any help into this. Thank you!

    Pet wood ID

Found this chunk of petrified wood and was just curious if anything can be learned from the growth rings as far as type of tree etc. @Rockwood

    Moscow fm wood?

found in Erie co New York. Are these a fossil or an erratic coal lump? It is very light in weight and has a wood texture
  4. I wasn’t even fossil hunting, I was on a horseback trip through Wyoming and came across this beautiful piece of petrified wood. I saw a lot of other cool chunks of it around, but only kept this one. I was around 10,000 feet in the mountains in a valley, about 50 miles from the nearest road or sign of civilization when I found it. The area I was in is visited by maybe 20 people a year, or less. I love fossils and have quite a few but I’m no expert, and I just wanted to share this cool find with some more ppl to appreciate. Any ideas about its age or price estimates (i won’t sell it, just curious) would be cool, but I don’t need that!
  5. this is only 2 inches by 1 inch but it is really hard compared to rocks and it has many layers. thanks in advance! You guys are awesome!!!!! it is curved and not flat like a bone
  6. Hi, I’ve found a few rocks on a Suffolk beach today and I was wondering if and if the are fossils. One has a wood like pattern. Could it be petrified wood? the other three glow under light. Any help would be appreciated thank you

    Bone or petrified wood?

Found these in a creek in West Virginia.

    Petrified wood with pyrite

Can somebody help me identify? Got this from a friend. Probably found in France. Think it's a nice piece but I want to know if this is petrified wood and is the outer layer pyritised? Thnx.

    Is this a fossil seed?

Hi everyone! I just found this pieces after the newest trip in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. The information I got that the sediment there is from late Jurassic to early Creataceous, and most the fossil they found are fern. So anyone have an idea that my pieces could be (Seed/wood/fern/..)? I’m very appreciated. thank you
  10. This is one of the things I received from a rockhound club member who was getting rid of stuff, which I showed off here: She did not recall anything about this piece, and I think the 'petrified fern' label is wrong but I was given nothing else to go on to track down its true nature or location of origin. Does anyone recognize it? It doesn't seem to have the rings that you would see in pet wood except for the Chinle Fm stuff from AZ which is so altered that often the grain is invisible. But the broken faces exhibit some odd little flat bits in cross-section, and there's that interesting cross-hatched texture that I hope give some clues (and the orangish color is similar to Chinle also..?) She has been all across the US and Canada, and Britain as well (originally from England) so that doesn't allow me to narrow it down much. The collection also included some stuff from Ginkgo Petrified Forest in Washington, and Eastern Oregon, and of course pet wood can come from many places, if that helps, but the only safe bet I would say is somewhere in the Western States. Just hoping someone recognizes the material as being from a specific site/formation.

    Bone or wood

Please bear with me I’m new
  12. I found this piece of wood (?) on Emerald Isle Beach in North Carolina yesterday and thought it was super interesting! It is black, layered, and has some sparkles. Could anyone identify it? I wondered if it was coal because of the sparkles but would coal be layered like that? I attached a picture with flash on to make the sparkles even more obvious. It’s about two inches long.
  13. As with my last post, these were gifts from an outgoing science teacher to me. Also as with my last post, I know very little about them. The school is in Arizona, so I might assume they are from here. My guess is petrified wood, of some sort. There are three samples, two pics of each. Thank you for all of your help.
  14. Stone bone

    Stone bone

I’ve found lots of bone on the beach. But this was a rare find. It looks like a small bit of wood fused onto the bone. I’ve collected for years, but definitely consider myself an amateur. curious to hear any opinions.

    Tooth or Wood?

I found this when I was a kid in a river in Montana. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?
  17. Hello! I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to look at this for me and help confirm it’s ID? I’m quite inexperienced and when I found this over the winter, I crammed as much info on ID-ing bone as I could and concluded it was wood / plant material. I find a lot of wood in this area, so that makes sense. It happened to be in the background of a photo I posted to Instagram, and someone said they’re sure it’s bone - so I thought I’d double check here. It’s from the Helmsdale, North of Scotland - Jurassic-aged Portgower Boulder Beds member (157.3 - 152.1 mya, Kimmeridgian). I’ve shown both sides, as some of it’s visible from that back of the rock too. There’s also a smaller piece of what looks to be the same sort of material on the other side too. (apologies I can’t seem to upload the photos in the order I intended - I hope they make sense)

    Identification Help - Backyard Find

Hello, I was outside this morning in my backyard here in Tennessee digging up a stump. I found this odd looking stone/fossil about 3ft deep. It stands up on a desk perfectly flat with no wiggle. Its about 3 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches tall and wide and a little over a pound in weight. It has some interesting markings. Not sure what it is. Thanks for you help!

    petrified wood?

Found this in the Iron Mountains of Southwest Virginia in Carroll County. It was on the surface of the ground. At first thought it was a piece of wood, which is probably why my mind went straight to petrified wood when I realized it was stone. It has rings, like growth rings of a tree, but I don't have the magnifying tools to make out any smaller structures within the rings. The outer surface also has a barklike texture. Am I right?
