I have been collecting for about three years now in various parts of West Virginia. I was thinking it might be nice to meet some others in the area that are interested in fossils and maybe do a couple trips to different localities. I would be happy to travel anywhere in WV and locations in neighboring states as well. I have included a picture of a nice Archimedes I recently found in Mercer County because we all love fossil pictures!

Have any of you people hunted Maysville, Kentucky?
Newbie_1971 posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
If so, how was it? I believe I am going to try it out this coming weekend and just wondered how it is, and what is commonly found there. -
Do you think its possible that nanotyrannus and tyrannosaurus could've shared a similar relationship to lions and hyenas where they would hunt at different hours to avoid competition? (Lions and hyenas hunt the same prey, but lions hunt at night whereas hyenas hunt at day.)

How do i find good spots to go fossil hunting- and how on earth do i determine if a rock has a fossil within, or IS a fossil?
75millionyearsago posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Mostly the title! I live in northern New Jersey- i’m aware that NJ used to be heavily submerged, and is host to many locations where you can find marine fossils such as ammonites, trilobites, and other small marine invertebrates- however, i have no clue as to how i can effectively search for and find fossils. I’ve gone to some dried river beds, dug in the banks, layered rock, and panned- but i realize that i dont quite know what i’m looking for. How do i determine if there is a fossil within a rock? How do i find good hunting locations? What are some of the key giveaways that a rock may contain a fossil or series of fossils? And how can i identify sedimentary rocks properly, so i know i’m looking at the right types? -

Hi everyone. Found this forum and gotta say - I LOVE IT! I just started learning how to hunt last summer. Anyways, I was gonna be in northwestern nebraska this weekend, and have been looking for places to fossil hunt. One place I saw was the badlands go into the northern part of nebraska near ashfall (which I guess you CANNOT collect it). I've been looking for a publically accesssible place to go to where it is allowed. Does anyone know a place they can recommend? I'm thinking just that general quadrant of the state or so for some mammal fossils. Thanks

Can I find fossils in blasted sediment near construction zone?
Walmart Bag posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Hey, so I currently live in Hyderabad, India. Im pretty sure theres no fossils generally being found over here (probably because theres almost 0 paleontologists here) however I did hear you can find fossils in sediments and/or quarries. There is a construction zone near my house where they have been blasting rock in this huge rock plateau. Do you think there could be fossils in the quarry or is that not really possible. -
Hi all! Apologies if this is not the right area to post this, if I need to re-post in another sub form please let me know. I’m looking for advice on how to expand my expertise in fossil hunting, preferably by connecting with other enthusiasts in a mentorship fashion. This probably seems like an odd request, and I feel like it’s strange to even ask. But it’s something I’ve been truly struggling with. A bit of back story - I moved to Florida roughly 3 years ago and have been head over heels in love with fossil hunting since my first dive in Venice, FL. Since then, I’ve done several Venice dives, gone hunting in the peace river, paid for dig site access in the bone valley, and gone to local fossil shows. Everywhere I go, I try to connect with local fossil hunters in effort to gain companionship in this area of my life (none of my family or friends shares this hobby with me) and it’s been strangely unsuccessful. I’ve found that everyone is very tight lipped & does not want to share much of their personal ventures. Which hey, I can completely understand and respect! They seem to already have their own groups or friends in the hobby and don’t want to open it up for a newbie. Which again - I respect! I’ve tried to go surface hunting myself as I can’t afford to dive in Venice all the time for “Guaranteed finds” & have spent many a Saturday (including today) walking creeks with no success. I know people are finding some great stuff here in central & southwest Florida, and it’s made me quite sad that I don’t really get to be a part of it unless I’m paying hundreds of dollars for a dive. I really don’t know how to connect with others in this hobby without seeming like I’m asking for their “honey holes” that I’m going to go geotag on my next Instagram post (which I would never do). Any advice? I really feel like I’ve put my best foot forward in these situations (and hey, maybe it’s just my personality or something lol) and I just keep coming up empty. anyhoo, I’ve loved lurking on these forms & seeing everyone’s fantastic finds. Thanks for reading!

Are there any Santa Margarita fm fossil sites that are still open/able to be collected from in and around the SF Bay Area? I want to try and hunt from the formation but all the classic sites, like bean creek, are now closed for collecting.

Suggestions? Peace River Florida fossil hunting south of Zolfo springs
Jasons_fossils posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I want to go back to Peace River but I don't want to do the normal canoe outpost thing this time. I want to take a kayak south of Zolfo springs were the river gets bendy, shallow, and remote. I don't have a kayak so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for where I can rent one or if they want a hunting buddy for the second week of May. -
Anyone in MD, Chesapeake Bay area going hunting this Saturday?
Mara_Masina posted a topic in General Fossil Discussion
Hey all, This weekend I was going to go on a trip with folks from my fossil club, but they cancelled last minute and I've already paid for a hotel room in the area. Therefore, weather be darned, I'm going fossil hunting anyway. Is anyone else going out on Saturday that might want company? I'm a pretty relaxed human who typically matches the energy in the room, as I like to be inoffensive and approachable. I just figured that it would be awesome to hunt with another forum member or two instead of going it alone.- 14 replies

Sorry if this is the wrong topic category, I don’t have much experience with this forum. I recently found out that there are Cambrian fossils in the Marble Mountains in California, and I’m wondering what the laws are for collecting there. I’ve always wanted to collect Cambrian fossils and that’s the closest location to me, but I don’t want to break any laws. If it is legal, what tools and equipment should I bring? Thanks!

A 2020 silver lining for me personally was discovering a new hobby and my love for shark tooth hunting. I am fortunate to live in Charleston, SC which we all know is a hot spot for fossil shark teeth. In March, as government shutdowns were coming on strong, a friend invited me to go look for some teeth and there was no turning back. I have posted some of these teeth over the course of the year, but attached is a picture of my shadow box with all of my best teeth found in 2020. As this challenging year comes to a close, let’s celebrate all of the best teeth found over the course of the year! I would love to see some of your best so post ‘em if you got ‘em!

I got to travel from home to visit family and of course I couldn't resist the chance to go dig! I mean really, it was only a 6 hour drive to get there. I was able to make 2 trips, both 2 days long. So I was able to put in some serious time. Including a few hours each day by flashlight. The location is...... wait, I'll mention that in a bit. The finds were mostly.... more on that later. Here are a couple photos of my finds Oh wait, I can't share any information These just might show up in my Secret Santa box and that would not help the "secret" part I will post the real thing once my box is guessed.

Fossil trip Hudson Valley to locate Wurstboro NY Eurypterids
Stingray posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Ok so I’m trying to get a group together to locate a bedding plane that has produced Eurypterids in the past ( James Hall plates ). Many hours of searching and reading have given me the location of the area of discovery. I usually have no issues hunting alone for finds but do to the locals , which I have attached an image of below. I would prefer to have company on this visit for additional safety measures . I’m free most days so hunting days are open for me. Oh and there are two locals there look close on the left for the black one- 5 replies

Hi guys! So I'm planning to go back to one of the Calvert County beaches to try my luck again- I haven't had any success with finding teeth bigger than about a quarter inch and I'm hoping to find something a little bigger next time. My current technique is to dig up sand from the water and sift through it super carefully- should I switch it up and try something different to find big teeth? If so, does anyone have any recommendations for how to find them? And, final question, which beaches are good for finding larger specimens? I know Purse and Matoaka are good for quantity but I don't know which are best for finding big fossils. I'm still very new to tooth hunting so any help would be appreciated!

I'm visiting DeLand for a week and a half, and really want to find a spot to search for fossils or shark teeth, haven't found many online and I know people have their own secret spots. Pm me locations if you don't want to share them publicly guys, I am only hand searching with a few family members. I am willing to drive a couple hours to spend a day hunting fossils

Hi, I'm relatively new to fossil hunting and I'd like to know of some spots to find stuff in or close to Essex county. I've been to Arkona for the Rock Glen conservation area and found some cool ones there, though I'm disapointed the quarry is closed off. If anyone knows of other spots around there that would be cool too! Thanks! Edit: Any tips for getting into quarries? There's a few around here and I think those might be good spots to check out. (I don't mean trespassing lol)
