I've been prepping my fossils manually for years. Glue is my friend and my worst enemy. For some of my delicate micros, one drop is more than enough to encase the tiny object AND glue it to whatever surface on which it rests. I've succeeded in gluing my fossils to silicone mats, pin points, and my fingers through plastic gloves after the glue ate through the gloves. Lately I've settled on wax paper and lots of rolling the piece around to keep it from pooling when the glue invariably rolls off the surface of less porous shells. It still sticks to the wax , but at least the wax peels off the paper and comes off with a bit of acetone and a delicate touch. There has to be a better way to do this with less permeable surfaces. What do you do to keep from gluing your pieces to the table?

Hello, I'm a newbie. I'm looking for advice on what product to place on the fossils in the boulder below. I want to stabilize them in the matrix before I do any more removal. The photo with the (5) had a great rib in it but crumbled upon getting the rock into my truck. Fossils are exposed on many sides. As I began removing matrix with my Dremel 290, more fossils were uncovered. I read many articles and posts about solution adhesives. I want to keep it simple. I found premade Paraloid B-72 Glue, and the more complicated acetone and b-72, b-76 pellets. I may try and use a filler on my rib (1) that has a crack. This has been a great COVID hobby for me. My science students will get fossil remnants from me as student of the week rewards. Suggestions welcomed.

READ ME FIRST. Every once in a while the topic of consolidants and adhesives comes up. I've attached some information that has helped me in the past. The first is a publication put out y the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections. The next is a discussion of consolidants and adhesives put out by Florida Museum Of Natural History. The final document is a study I did on consolidants about 15 years ago. To this day my favorite adhesive is a combination of Paraloid B 72 and acetone at various concentrations. I like this because it is reversible in acetone. If I have an immediate need in the field I prefer superglue. My favorite consolidant continues to be Elmer's glue all (poly vinyl acetate emulsion) diluted to 5 to 10% in water. G'day everyone! My dad and I have tried making some paraloid glue by mixing 25% paraloid with 75% acetone. The paraloid has been dissolving for a few hours and a thick solution with the consistency of wood glue has settled to the bottom. Do we use this thick solution at the bottom to glue and strengthen our fossils? Thanks, Dan

How to repair cephalopod - which adhesives or repairers?

Hi forum, Newbie here. As the pics convey - I've had a breakage with my cephelapod. Can anyone suggest how to go about repairing? What adhesives should be used? Are there repairers who I could take this to instead? The fossil pieces fit together reasonably well. The backing is a concrete slab of sorts, so no idea how to bond this strongly enough given there is only around 3/4 inch surface area. Thank you.

Adhesives: Cyanoacrylate ("Super Glue") or other options

Hello, What are the thoughts and recommendations on repairing fossils broken in many pieces. I've mostly used "super glue" cyanoacrylate in the past. The one advantage is that the thin glue allows the fragments to fit together easily. The other advantage is that the first pieces glued stick together quickly and firmly so as to move on to the next of several pieces that need to be added to those first pieces. The big disadvantage is that it is permanent and can't be adjusted a few minutes after gluing. The other problem I've found is that superglue mistakenly applied on the face of the fossil can be unsightly. Are there other glues that would be superior to gluing together a very fragmented piece??
