My visit of the famous belemnite cemetery in Beutenaken, the Netherlands
Mart1980 posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
This week I went to look for belemnites in the "big forest" near Beutenaken (South Limburg, the Netherlands), in the uncovered parts of the famous belemnite cemetery in the "Gulpense kalk" (Gulpen formation, part of the Cretaceous period). If you look closely you can find a lot of (mostly fragments of) belemnites, especially Belemnitella Mucronata (Schlotheim). The high concentration of belemnites in certain places in this forest is because the limestone has disappeared through dissolution. The harder belemnites are left behind. After a lot of work I finally had a day off and wanted to combine a walk with fossils. Last week it had rained, for me an excellent opportunity to walk in the beautiful south of the Netherlands and at the same time look for some Belemnites. I live in the east of the Netherlands, where it is flat. So the south with its hills and small rivers like the Gulp feels like a holiday. Especially in the Beutenaken area.- 9 replies

A stone with two ribs, a half vertebra and some rests of some belemnits from the quarry Kromer near Holzmaden (Lower Jurassic). All the bones are Ichthyosaur bones. The story of this one is kinda curious because on the stone was firstly only the damaged vertebra visible. But after a hit with my hammer I saw two cross sections, which belong to Ichthyosaur ribs: After some prep: And some pictures of the result: It was very tough to prep it because the stone is extremely hard and the separation layer between the fossil and stone was bad. I think all in all it took about 5 hours to finish this one. I am not completely satisfied with the result but its okay. -
If you ever travel across Russia you can see fossils even in the subway and in the facing of buildings (In Moscow and Saint Petersburg). Once an acquaintance walked with a dog along the embankment in the center of St. Petersburg next to his house and found fossil trilobite right in the stone that broke off from the Neva river bank. He had to quickly run home to take a hammer In the Moscow metro, there are more than 50 stations where you can meet the fossils of ammonites, corals, nautilus, belemnites and other ancient animals that lived on Earth in the dinosaurs era. Among them there are both small and large enough - the size of the largest "inhabitant" of the metro is 60 centimeters in diameter. They come across not only at old stations, but also on new ones - it all depends on from what material are the walls built. Materials containing remains of fossil organisms were brought from deposits in Armenia, Georgia, the Urals, the Crimea, Italy and the Moscow region. Most of the fossils in marble limestones (the transition stage between limestone and marble) from the Georgian deposits of Salieti and Moliti.
