Greetings forum members! I was looking through the last rocks from my latest fossil hunt and I found this interesting piece. Its a partial Pterygotid body segment! I had broken it and I thought I had thrown it back but apparently I kept like 80% of it. I glued it back together as best I could last night and was looking more closely when I found something interesting. I’m not completely sure but I have a hunch that the one end of this fossil might have predation marks from a larger Pterygotid. Could this be true or did it just break weird when it was molted? I was wondering if anybody on the forum could help me out with this. Thanks for looking! Owen

Hello all! As I’ve been taking a closer look at some of the rocks from my previous fossil hunt on August 22, I have been finding some pretty cool fossils that I overlooked at first. I am going to show some of the more interesting ones on this post. Enjoy! ~ Owen

Hi Forum members, Yesterday I went to a spot in Herkimer County in search of Eurypterids! This spot exposed the Fiddlers Green Formation of the Upper Silurian Bertie Group. I had never found a Eurypterid so I was excited to go, and I had heard this was a productive spot. I got there and the first rock I looked at had an exploded eurypterid on it! There were eurypterid bits and pieces all over the place. Eurypterids seemed to be much more abundant at this spot than I thought they would be! I only got to stay there for a half an hour but managed to track down a few nice finds. The rock at this locality is hard like concrete and is pretty much impossible to split (especially the freshly weathered out material). All of my finds came from surface collecting in the weathered out rocks. Thanks for looking! Owen

Hello kind folks of the fossil forum, I recently had the opportunity to take photos of some of the more rare/unknown fossils found in the fiddlers green member of the Bertie group. All these fossils came from Lang’s quarry in Ilion, New York and are not Eurypterids. I was given permission from Al Lang himself to post these photos. These are from his personal collection. He does like his privacy and doesn’t like people showing up out of the blue. I’m lucky to have met him and received an invitation. I’ll stress this was a huge stroke of luck and he doesn’t often have or want visitors. He was kind enough to let me show these photos, so let’s appreciate this opportunity together. Some of these fossils have been seen by very few people. I was also allowed to take photos of his Dolichopterous specimens which are also exceedingly rare but they will go under a different category on the forum at another time. Now some of these can be found in ontario at the ridgemount quarry but keep in mind these are from a different layer than the Eurypterids found in central New York. The stratigraphy is slightly different across the state. Either way, at least some of these may be described....some maybe not? Photos to come. im going to post the pics together with 2-3 grouped together if they are the same and I’ll separate photos if they are loners. This will make it easier for people to quote photos.

I took my son Ian to Ridgemount Quarry in Onatrio, Canada on Friday. It was perfect weather for collecting but the area in the quarry allowed to collectors has been pretty much exhasted or at least the easy stuff on top. Still if you move enough rock you do find things. I am looking for some help in id'ing a couple things that appear to be not eurypterids which we did find some parts and then a body which was abandoned by a woman whose kids decided fossils were not their thing. The first one I believe is a colonial algae? I would like to believe its cooksonia but that seems unlikely based on the size. The second one I can't imagined is a Eurypterid part, so what is it? Thanks for any help. I'm sure Malcom will be able to id in a second.

Fiddlers Green Formation of the Bertie Group Eurypterids Thank you to many of the members at the Niagara Peninsula Geological Society for helping me find and giving me several Eurypterid specimens from the Fiddlers Green Formation of the Bertie Group on July 6th, 2012. This was one of the first exciting fossil collecting trips I have been on, as most of my collecting just comes from the Kingston area or Prince Edward County. Here are several of th samples collected that day, most of them kindly given to me by NPGS members. I'll post the larger heads that I collected over at the Williamsville Formation of the Bertie Group sometime soon. Thank you NPGS Member, Corey Lablans More photos of the Eurypterid fossils check out: http://clfossilsandminerals.blogspot.ca/2012/07/eurypterids-by-corey-lablans.html
