Hello all, Curious to see if you folks could assist me in the identification of this item. I came across this at an auction. Initially I thought it was a cast metal - non-ferrous (perhaps bronze) - depiction of a Peach, Lemon, etc., and was perhaps used as an altar fruit. But the material just does not quite fit the bill - unless the piece is made of quite ancient metal. Upon diving into research, I came across a "fossilized flint coconut" which had strong similarities, (however this piece has only one pore or 'eye') which then led me to learning about flint sponges, which also had strong similarities. Any thoughts or further resources would be greatly appreciated, Kindly, J

I found this on the Thames at east tilbury, can anyone identify what it is that I’ve found? I think it’s a fossilised coconut It has three segments but I can’t get a photo of that side to upload. Thanks.

Today, I found this coconut-sized fossil (or just rock) partially imbedded into very brittle (shale-like) cliffside along a hiking trail on Oahu, about 2,000 feet in elevation. The branching pattern along the surface is what caught my attention. At first, I thought it looked like a coconut, but then remembered that coconuts are not actually indigenous to Hawaii. I then press my thumb against the front and a chunk crumbled off, revealing highly defined internal layers. I’m actually a chemist, not a geologist; so I am fascinated, but at a loss. Fossil or not, can anyone help me understand what this might be and how it was formed? Thank you, Richard
