Hi all! Newbie here, Washington state. I've been collecting fossils since finding them in the gravel road waiting for my brothers during summer baseball practice (primarily crinoids)... years ago... Since then, I've had the opportunity to collect fossils from the Midwest, Texas, and West Coast. My most recent finds are from coastal beaches. My favorite finds are agatized univalves (marine snails) from Oregon and ammonites from Texas. I'm a marine/aquatic biologist. In addition to research I've always worked on science-based outreach /education. I'm in an in-between knowledge place RE: fossils, and I look forward to learning and sharing a lot more. I'm looking forward to getting to know this community!

Hi there, I am new to this forum and looking to get into fossil hunting. I know some basics, mostly from light reading and documentaries, but have zero experience in actually hunting, collecting and prepping. I have so many questions, first would love to know where about's, preferably close to Auckland, I can go to look for some fossils I can collect. Any other likeminded people here in Kiwidom? Thanks, Werner

Hello! I have a question. Recently I have started to purchase fossils from closed locations and countries that are now closed for fossil collecting. Can anyone tell me any good closed sites that I can purchase fossils from? I barely know any. I only know about these closed sites / countries. Chile Brazil Lee Creek Mine Bone Valley? I'm not sure if it is closed. Hopefully someone can tell me some good closed sites. Age and country / area does not matter Thanks Cheers - Adriano

Does anyone know if there is anywhere to collect brachipods and other inverts in the Silica Hills of West Texas? I am a geologist who used to live In Austin, TX (20 years ago). I recently asked some colleagues who did hydrogeologic and geologic fieldwork in west TX, but have not gotten any leads. They say all(?) on private property. This is a bucket list trip for a buddy of mine!!!

I watched a youtube video on a fossil collection someone had purchased, and someone in the comment section actually said something like "buying fossils is for (expletive). I go out in 110 degrees and work all day to find mine". I thought "wow! do people really think like that?". So is there some unsaid rule that people who dig their own fossils are somehow cooler or tougher than those who buy them? I don't have any accessible fossil sites near me. My collecting career was limited to a few months I spent in southwestern New Mexico. I was then in an accident from which I'm still recovering, which prohibits me from strenuous activity. Just curious. I just bought some fossils online. Scott

I am still interested in expanding my fossil collection, and i´ve been looking at various option in my home city, but there is literally only one single mineral store, and it really is quite small. I´ve visited it a few times and for now they don´t really have anything i am absolutely interested in. Since fossil sites are so far away, i can only collect at them occasionally, and then again, reptile fossils (which i am most interested in) don´t occur too often around here. I don´t really feel like ordering from international websites (such as eBay or any of the international fossil stores) at the moment, and there are only two online sites in Sweden that sell fossils, 1 of which is completely unreliable, and the other doesn´t really have a that great amount of specimens. So, my question is, where do you get fossils in a city/county completely uninterested in them?
