  3. First Fossil Hunting Trip(s)

A break in the bitter winter cold gave me a bit of spring fever this week. Thursday I had to venture to Newport for an errand and the weather was a balmy 30-ish and sunny, I decided to go check out this location. Tides were favorable for hitting the beach this week and I took advantage. With the major storm that came through recently, I figured there might be some new rock eroded down to search through. Armed with only my brick hammer, goggles and gloves, I scoured through pieces for about an hour. The rocks here were pretty well saturated, and those that did not outright disintegrate trying to split them, only revealed mud and ice between the layers. I tried placing them in sunlight to dry a bit, but finding anything in the field was futile. I grabbed some small slabs that for whatever reason seemed promising and brought them home to split. While carefully splitting at the kitchen table, my 4 year-old took up brush-cleaning duties. It was a fun little project for lil man and I. The haul yielded some potential finds, and a thirst for a return adventure with the kids.

  5. The Ferns are Growing!

Well... I seem to be turning into a Rhode Island native at this point. This past weekend I was able to head down to Cory's Lane for an afternoon of digging. Here's my latest find from the Carboniferous period. This fern still needs to be cleaned up a bit and I'm still trying to nail down an exact ID. At just over 3 feet long this is now my biggest and most complete find to date (1-upped myself again). More pics to come once I finish cleaning this guy up. P.S. This was definitely not fun to carry back to the car . I couldn't save the entire second half of this fern as it was partially destroyed when I ripped up the 8 foot slab of rock this fossil was on. I did manage to save the middle section at least!
  6. Large Pecopteris arborescens

From the album Cory's Lane Fossil Locality

Large Negative imprint of Pecopteris arborescens. Found in 2017 at Cory's Lane fossil locality, Rhode Island.
  7. In between all of the 4th of July weekend barbecues I was able to make it down to Cory's Lane, Rhode Island for a few hours of shale splitting. The day started out slow with only a few small plant imprints found, but I eventually managed to rip up a 5 foot slab of rock with a larger fern section on one end of it. After cutting the slab down to a little over a foot and a half in length this Pecopteris arborescens manages to go down as the largest fern I've found at this locality! It was a nice start to the long weekend, but the real win was the awesome weather .

  11. Mariopteris?

Can anyone say what the carboniferous plant in the lower left corner is? The vein preservation is poor, but is this maybe Mariopteris? Found at Cory's Lane, Rhode Island
  12. Cory's Lane Outting

It's a bit short notice, but I'm planning to do some shale splitting this Sunday 6/11/2017 at Corys Lane. The weather this weekend is looking good and low tide is at an opportune time on Sunday (about 3pm). If anyone is bored you should come say hi .

  25. Mystery Imprint in Plant Material

With winter in New England fast approaching, I decided to spend the afternoon at Cory's Lane in Rhode Island. I found a number of Pennsylvanian aged plant imprints, but one plate of Neuropteris imprints has me stumped. This plate has a mystery object in it (A mystery to me at least). The long imprint going down the middle of this plate looks like an imprint of a stick, but I had thought sticks didn't preserve well in the Rhode Island Formation. Can anyone id the large, straight shaped imprint? Thanks!
