  1. Heading to Charleston

Hi, everyone! I’m headed over to Charleston tonight, will be in the area a couple days. Never did any hunting around there but I’ve always wanted to go. I read that there’s a good starting location behind a YMCA in Summerville, and with a bit of hiking you can find other locations, so maybe I’ll start there. I saw posts from a number of people that started there and had good results, so it’s not someone’s secret location. I read that no tools are allowed when in Summerville? Even if I don’t find anything, it’s worth a shot and I’ll be heading up to the Calvert Cliffs on my drive back up to Jersey. I think I’ll check out some of the more southern spots this time- I’ve only searched off of Brownie’s Pt. Still, if anyone has any tips (i.e. don’t bother with that silly ditch behind the Y) of course I’d love to hear them. Of course, I’ll post anything I find.
  2. Pyritized Clam shells

Question for the group: is it common for a clam shell to pyritize in contact with a clay? This was from Edisto Beach SC. They were buried in mud to where they are not pyrite. I am assuming the clay is heavy in iron sulfide. Douglas.
  3. In Charleston for a few days

In Charleston for a couple of days. Thinking of hitting Edisto Beach this evening. Anyone interested in joining? Feel free to PM me
  4. Hello! I'm making a 10 hour drive from NJ down to Columbia, SC for the total eclipse, September 20-22 (the eclipse is on the 21st). Looks like I picked a hotel location at least an hour and a half from any spots I've seen mentioned here and elsewhere (Colleton State Park, Summerville, Folly Beach, Edisto Beach, etc). Re-booking a new location is not happening since I just looked at hotels.com and saw only red throughout the entire area. Haven't seen too many 2017 posts for South Carolina and I'm nervous about all this mention of strict regulations and permits. Any tips or suggestions? I'm reading that some areas- esp. the beach areas- will be crazy because of eclipse event traffic. Strange, since you just need to be able to see the sun, so I'm not sure why people need to get to someplace special as long as their within the path. I guess people want to be somewhere nice. I wouldn't mind it if I were fossil hunting during the eclipse.
  5. We spent the week on Edisto Beach this past week and found a decent number of little sharks teeth. The first surprise was not 1 but 2 great white teeth. Those are the first great whites that we have found on the beach in the last 5 years on Edisto. The next surprise came to my girlfriend when I used the big great white to propose. It was perfect, her first reaction was to finding a huge tooth, the second reaction was to a "ring stuck to it", the third reaction was realizing that I put it there for her. She only had a moment of disappointment when she realized that she didn't find her own tooth but that quickly disappeared and she said yes!
  6. Edisto Beach State Park

Went to Edisto Beach State Park in South Carolina today for two hours. It was very nice, although the wind was quite cold. I found five sting ray mouth plates and 45 shark teeth. This is the most I've found in that amount of time at any beach I've gone to. There weren't many people there (because it's April) so I didn't have to walk for a while to get to a clear spot. Only walked about a half a mile down from the first beach access point and then back.
  7. My 76 year old mom fished this out of Edisto this past week. We are stumped.
  8. Hi All. I'm going to blast down to Florida from December 23-30 and then Edisto Island, SC Dec 30 - Jan 3rd. In Florida, I plan to do a lot of kayaking and fossil hunting near the Rainbow springs sp area (withlachochee, steinhatchee, wacassassa) and then near Edisto Island when in SC. Even though I've fossil hunted there before, any tips would most welcome. Kent
  9. Planning a fossil hunt on Thursday Aug 13th. Will be hunting the Edisto river. Will not be using Scuba. Will use canoe, mask, snorkel, weight belt, underwater lighting. Looking for interested parties.
  10. Need some help here, found this jawbone on the beach the other day at Edisto. I think it may be a deer or elk but I have seen pics of sheep , goats and hogs and it resembles them also. Found this cool piece of pottery also about 10 ft away
  11. Message me if interested in shark tooth hunting the Edisto river next week. Thursday 11am. Searching for fossilized Angustiden shark teeth. The water will be 3 feet deep. Will use shovel, screen, sifter, snorkel.
