I think this is part of a temporal bone. It's approximately 2 x 2 x 2 inches. Not expecting a taxonomic identification, I'm just hoping someone can recognize and point out a couple osteological landmarks for me so I can orient myself with respect to adjacent cranial bones and know if I should be comparing it at the left or right side of the skull as I look for a match.

Galveston Bay dredge spoils, Beaumont formation late Pleistocene. Collected this vertebral epiphyseal plate this afternoon. Based on size and shape I'm guessing a proboscidean?

Hollowed out Bones, Very Late Pleistocene Beaumont Formation
darrow posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Among the hundreds of very late Pleistocene age bones and bone fragments I've collected from a local Galveston Bay dredge spoils site, I have four that are hollowed out like the one pictured below. I believe this to be a proboscidean foot bone. Anyone recognize this type damage and know of a mechanism that could cause it?- 4 replies

We had a really low tide Thursday with the cold front came through so before work I made a quick trip to check a favorite spot and picked up another partial tooth. The 5th one I've found in perhaps 15 visits to the same 100 yards of shoreline. Darrow

I found this today. I thought it was an astragalus until I picked it up and saw the other side. I'm guessing a megatherium proximal phalanx? I can't find a good reference online to verify.
