Hey there! I'm back again, and again I'm on another continent I moved to New Zealand at the beginning of the year, and in between the incredible fishing and birding I forced myself to head out to Glen Afric (2 hour drive) for a stab at some crabs. The day started out with a couple belemnites, quite long and skinny. The concretions were various shades of khaki to black, some of them still more clay than rock. There were various shells encrusted in them. I kept my eyes peeled for a 'crab' shaped concretion, however this was easier said than done. After a full lap (about 400m) I was nearly back where I started when I picked up a rock, turned it over and holy moly it had legs! Please tell me they're crab legs and not belemnites trolling me haha!! If it's a crab, would an air scribe be safe in the hands of an amateur? Anyway I had to go, but I'll be back!

My family and I have gone on a trip for the holidays so when we recently decided to take a trip down to Glen Afric again, we quickly realized we were no longer used to the hill that leads down to the beach. Luckily it was worth it and as always we found a few fossils that I have yet to learn about. Fossil number 1 Fossil number 2 I think this one could be a whale bone. I'm just wondering what part it could be Fossil number 2 Fossil number 3 As for the last fossil, I was wondering if this could be coprolite?

A couple of hours in on our fossil hunt at Glen Afric, I spotted another crab fossil! This had now been our 3rd crab of the day. We have not found a similar crab to this one. Any ideas or thoughts on why the colour is so strange?

Hey everyone Weather and tides look good for Motunau and possibly Glen Afric this weekend. I'll be driving through from Ashburton, is anyone keen to join? I've never been to Motunau so this would be an exciting exploratory trip for me.

First off, I am a complete beginner to fossils and also this forum and I am hoping someone with more experience can help me ID this possible fossil I found. I found it at Glen Afric in New Zealand and I know there have been some penguin species found before. Does anyone know what this could be? Its a large piece of rock, +- 20kg (40lb) and was a pain to get back to the car so hope it is something! Thanks!

My third crab find! Can anyone hazard a guess on the orientation - from what I have learnt here there are signs of legs on the outside.
