Out hunting yesterday, Sun shining with friends and my friends were finding lots more than I.. it happens. However, I always find somethings interesting. An Equus tooth showing traverse HSBs Posterior end of a dolphin jaw Some Galeocerdo mayumbensis, which I guess ages the site as Miocene... and just before it fell thru my sieve.. captured this Bull ? or Dusky tooth... So, now for the Fossil ID requests.. First, a very small Osteoderm... I found at least 2 Holmesina osteoderms in the group photo above, but this one seems to me not to be armadillo. This is about an inch !!! but screams Glyptodont to me.. I would like to hear from those who have found glyptodon osteoderms, what they think about this one. If consensus is Glyptodont, where on the carapace does this small osteoderm appear ? and the 2nd ID request.. Many know that I like to find ear bones, periotics, petrosals, bulla, whatever.. Is the white blob on the left edge of the photo an ear bone or just a blob of mud concretion... I will provide some additional photos to help evaluation. To me, it seems like skull material around a periotic/petrosal... I was thinking 1/2 of a dugong periotic, but I imagine that @Harry Pristis or @Plantguy have actually found those and may be able to bring some light on the topic.

Went hunting yesterday. There were not many choices with the water deep and currents fast. I was pleased to know that @Balance was out there dealing with the same conditions. It was cool but not cold with a 5 mm wetsuit on. I went back to a spot I had been digging over months because I believed it would be chest deep. I had intermittent downpours with the last ending around noon. I covered the cockpit of my Kayak with a tarp made expressly for that purpose. Everything else into hatches. The lowest water was chest deep so I could only dig down 6 inches or so. It was enough. In the 2nd sieve , I got a Tridactyl horse periotic, likely Nannippus. 32 x 19 mm, One for your local disk, Jp Even though fewer keepers based on the water depth, some very nice unique finds: A Glyptodon edge osteoderm, Alligator tooth, a few nice Tiger and Bull shark teeth. Here are some for comments and ID A shark vert, largest I have ever found. I found one that looks the same , only smaller 4 months ago. Curious that I have found 3 at this location and no different looking shark verts. Although very difficult to identify individual shark verts this one seems most similar to Hammerhead, I find a few but not many, Hammerhead teeth. A couple of broken fossils that I am not sure of 1. Stingray dermal 2. Alligator osteoderm A tooth fragment: Even the broken , are interesting

Below is an armadillo scute from Venice Beach in Florida, stated by the seller to have belonged to a Glyptotherium floridanum. However, it is my understanding that the scutes of another large Pleistocene armadillo, Holmesina, are also rather common in Florida, and the scute does look a lot like scutes identified as having belonged to the latter. Thanks in advance for any proposed ID's Othniel

My last post was about a Kingfisher I chased after hunting... Now I would request some IDs... One interesting item is what might be a Shrimp burrow, but I do not know very much about these except that @Harry Pristis has some that housed much larger shrimp and I seek his insights... Another very nice find is a section of a Castoroides incisor (Tusk), only my third such find at this size. I found a whole one in 2019 and identified it as C. leiseyorum but I believe the name has since changed to C. dilophidus... Any ID suggestions for this two small oddly shapes, complete ?, bones ? Last ID request for this Osteoderm... At 1st, due to shape I thought Armadillo, but now Glyptodon may be more likely.. It is an "edge" Osteoderm (left side in this photo)... Finally, just noting the unusual roots on this Equus tooth... always they are broken off the horse teeth I find... Many high quality fossils in addition to chasing the Kingfisher .. This memory will last... Thanks for any/all suggestions, insights, comments....

Almost everything was found yesterday at Peace River (FL). I’m still new to fossil hunting. I do my research but still need help - there’s a lot to learn. TIA for anyone who takes the time to let me know what I’ve got here! In order, I think I have: -Deer ankle bone -Scapula? Turtle shell? -Glyptodont scutes -Horse/camel incisor? -Manatee/dugong tooth? -Shells (I know nothing about these but love these two-wanted to share) -Gator/plant? Pattern is only on one side -Deer tooth? -Camel/deer tooth? -Stumped - too many teeth look too similar…tapir? -Recent shark tooth finds (contents of the final picture were found on land in Sarasota county and not at the river) I think that’s more than enough for now I have quite a few horse/bison/camel/llama/etc teeth that I also need help differentiating, but I want to try a little more before asking for help. Any good charts/info that help point out differences in these would be greatly appreciated! Adding some pics of recent shark tooth finds just for the fun of sharing. If you see anything special (rare/pathos/etc) that I need to know about, please let me know! Again, thanks in advance for all the help! Any ideas appreciated - if better pics/measurements are needed, just ask

Got out on the river yesterday for what turned out to be a productive day. It was a chilly morning so the wetsuit was a necessity. Even if the air temp is warmer the water stays cold throughout the day. I returned to a gravel bed I found earlier in the week and got right down to digging and sifting. Every clean out of the sifter provided a good number of various small shark teeth. Tiger, Sand Tiger, Snaggle Tooth were abundant. A few small partial megs and even a baby Mako made an appearance. Below is a picture of the best of the shark teeth along with an alligator tooth and what I believe is probably a modern pig. left side = Tiger, Sand Tiger, baby Mako and the possible pig. right side = Snaggle tooth, Lemon and Alligator. A couple of close ups of the Alligator: And a couple of close ups of what I think is the pig. If it may be something else please chime in- These finds and the additional bag full of small shark teeth would have been a good day. I was lucky and also came up with a variety of other finds pictured below- Left side- 3 Glyptodont Osteoderms, (the top one from the tail),1 Giant Armadillo Osteoderm. Right side- 5 Turtle/Tortoise leg spurs, 2deer antler bases, 2 gar fish scales, 1 Sting Ray scute, 1 Tilly bone. A couple of close ups of the tail osteoderm- The following large pieces appear to be giant tortoise shell fragments the biggest measures 5.75” x 3.5”. I have at least 5 additional bones I’m working to ID. A possible tiny astragalus, seismoid or maybe magnum, a small medial phalange, a small distal phalange and another possible astragalus or maybe cuboid. I’ll be posting the ones I can’t figure out in the ID section if I hit a dead end. Definitely worth the chilly water on an otherwise perfect day on the river. Looking forward to getting back out there as soon as possible!

@Rockwood Wouldn't this be too big to be glyptodont? Or am I missing something? Including one I found for size reference.

Found in creek in Texas. I pulled mastodon tusks and molars out of the same creek. Could it be mammoth fragment or tapir jaw fragment? Also please note fossils here do not turn black like Florida, but stay white with blue inclusions.

Found this in South Texas sandy gravel matrix. Pleistocene era. It's pretty small. But could this be a glyptodont osteoderm? It doesn't look like the turtle/tortoise pieces I normally find. The seams are very pronounced, and the grain on broken places is very fine and not as spongy as the turtle pieces.

This Fossil came from the south coast of Buenos Aires in Argentina. The zone was formed 10,000 years ago during the last ice age. (NOTE!) this is not my fossil

I found this rock recently in an area where high mesas are eroding near the river. I know there was a lot of Pueblo activity and also likely pre-Pueblo. There is a lot of volcanic rock, but nothing that looks like this. The erosion is exposing tons of river rock of all sizes, that likely came from the north with glacier melt. This area is by the river, roughly halfway between mountains and volcanoes. The rock is smallish, palm-sized, and sort of a squished pyramid shape. It turns blackish when wet, but as it dries it becomes this grayish color. I have looked at it with a magnifier and don't see anything that looks like man made tooling marks, but do notice a lot of features that look like bone. If it is possible to say- it is neither light like pumice nor heavy like a dense rock. I have searched online and the closest thing I can find to it are some images of glyptodont scutes, only my rock is not flat or cookie-like. I am wondering if it could have come from an edge or near the tail of a glyptodont or similar creature. This is causing a lot of head scratching, so please, any ideas or suggestions of places to look or people to contact will be much appreciated. I hope these photos show enough to figure it out.
