Here is something you don't see everyday.....or perhaps just once in a lifetime. I have been dealing with meteorites and tektites for about ten years, and I have never seen a piece of Libyan Desert Glass of this size. I recently acquired it and while doing some searching on the web, I failed to find a comparable specimen anywhere close to this size. This piece is about the size of football and weighs 5.6 kilograms. The largest on record is 25 kilograms. At the time I acquired this, it was likely the largest specimen on the private market. The first photo shows a close-up of the schlieren streaks in the piece - which are thought to be mineral traces of the original impactor that created this material. What this piece lacks in translucency, it makes up for in sheer mass.
