Hello, I am curious about this piece of what i think may be a jaw fragment. Found on James River in Virginia within Yorktown Formation. There appears to be one intact tooth and a portion of an adjacent tooth that has broken, leaving a cavity. Measures approx 2 x 1.5 x 1 cm. (The background grid is in centimeters) Appreciate any/all feedback. Thanks!!

OK. I spent Sat on the James River collecting. It wasnt a great tooth trip, only found one sand shark. But its NICE. LOL I did, of course, find plenty of Chesapectens. Jeffersonius is my favorite, so I snagged a LOT of them. I also picked up a number of Madisonius. I think. Thats the first question. These ARE Madisonius, yes?

Hello! I found something I can’t get a line on, so I’ve come to the forum for help. This is a beach find from the James River in Virginia. I think most of the marine materials are Miocene, I’m not sure of the formation(s). I think this a higher likely hood of being a small marine mammal bulla, but the form is different than any others I have seen, it looks sort of like a mammal tooth, but without the root. It is mineralized, no smell from flame, and very hard, but not quite as dense as other earbone material I have found at the same site. There are traces of black harder and more refl

I found this piece of bone while walking a bank a few miles below Hopewell on the James River this past weekend. My Rockd app says this area is the Charles City formation. The bank here is fine brown sand mixed with small pea gravel that turns into a marsh area. I've never found much bone or fossil type rocks at this spot before as this is a place we usually search for arrowheads and stone tools at this location. However just up river a mile or two I just found a bank in the same type formation that has a very large line of vertebra sticking out of the side of the bank. There on that beach up

Trying a Different Spot in the Mid-Atlantic Miocene
I_gotta_rock posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
I've been hearing about Chippokes Plantaion State Park in Surry, VA for the last year or so. Finally got out there this weekend. Being a shell person, I was rather disappointed that the only thing one is allowed to collect at that park is shark teeth. But, they do allow something to be collected and pictures don't require more shelves to be installed in the family room. Here's a video I did f the trip: Plus a few still highlights: I I think the vultures were waiting for the cliff to fall on my head. Sun up, sundown and a beautiful day in-between- 19 replies

Found a complete version today, that looks very similar to a split object, found last week. It doesn't look like other worn bulla bones I have found in the same area, but at least the split piece has a distinct radiating grain, so I'm guessing it is not one of last nights leftover beans. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Found this on Sunday in the James River near Jamestown. Any thoughts on ID? Thinking mako maybe. It’s around 2” long. Can’t feel any serrations but it’s fairly worn.

We had such a good time fossil hunting for the first time a few days ago, that it has become all our kids want to do. Took the kids to a site along the James River today. We found some cool stuff and were wondering if y’all could help ID some of them. Thanks in advance. I think this one is a bone fragment, but it’s pretty small, and I’m not sure if it’s even identifiable.

We found this piece of shell on our trip along the James River in Virginia, and were wondering what the circular patterns on the top were.

My wife's family reunion is taking place in Newport News, Va. next weekend. As always, when I travel, I like collecting a little bit of the "past" wherever I go. It sounds like the James and York rivers can provide some collecting possibilities. My concern is not to trespass. If anyone can enlighten me on how the shorelines of these rivers are dealt with, it will hopefully keep me out of trouble!!!! I did find this statement: In Virginia, the rivers, bays, creeks, ocean shores and their bottomlands are owned by the state and are legally presumed to be public lands unless they are proven to be

Hey all, this is something I found again when going through my collection. I found this about 10 years ago on the James River in Virginia, not too far away from Hopewell. For the life of me I can't remember what my friend told me it was, and he has since moved across the country and I am unfortunately unable to contact him. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I found this piece last weekend on the side of the James river. I cannot tell if it is old or just from an animal that died recently. The end of the curved piece reminds me of an animals tooth or possibly even a long nail. It is round with black on the outside. Very smooth like enamel. I really have no idea. Who are my smart fossil ppl out there who can identify it...?!

The Nor'Easter a few weeks ago brought extremely high winds and tides on the James River. The water brought lots of flotsam to the beach as well as some things I hadn't seen before. Sorry that I didn't place a ruler on these photos, but many of them are 4-5 inches at their widest point. Several are solid but some were fragile and separated into perfect, smaller versions of themselves (see photos). They have to be teeth, but I don't even know if they are fossilized? They have a pearly sheen. Our beach lies at the bottom of a 40-60 foot bluff, east of the Scotland Ferry across the r

Anyone have any good recommendations on a good coastal spot that produces decent teeth around OBX,NC to Surry County? I'm not looking for your secret spot, but a general area that has a decent chance to produce a few nice teeth over a day of fossil hunting. GMR was what I was originally planning, but the Tar River level is probably going to push flood stages over the next several hours. My kids are pretty anxious and I don't want to disappoint. Any help would be great.
