Fossils were a shared interest between my father and I.... after he passed last year I have longed for his enthusiasm and knowledge of paleontology and fossils... While living in Alaska I found several however most in my collection are purchased due to their beauty... I look forward to reading posts and viewing members collections...

Found this, it's from the early permian ecca group. I have found mesosaur as well as pygocephalomorph crustaceans where the specimen in question was found. I first thought it might be a juvenile mesosaur, but the ribs look to thin for mesosaur. Can anyone confirm juvenile mesosaur or is this something else? I can't find any information on any other vertebrate fauna from the area and fish are rare. This specimen does look a little fishy though.

What's the difference between Stereosternum and Mesosaurus?
glu posted a topic in Questions & Answers
Hello everyone, I've looked for a paper about mesosaurs from Brazil but did't find anything online. Does anybody know how can I tell the difference between the two species of mesosaurs found in those permian sediments (Mesosaurus brasiliensis and Stereosternum tumidum)? Thanks- 2 replies

Hi, I saw this in an antique store for sale. They are not sure what type it is and I have some ideas but not sure either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Not the best picture, it is about 1 foot long. Also thoughts on real or fake.

So this mesosaurus skeleton has been on the favorite auction site for ages. It looks pretty rough, but after reading all the informative fossil preparation posts on this forum I'm beginning to think this skeleton could look nice with some prep work. The only areas of concern are the big sections of matrix that look filled in (shown outlined in the picture). This was likely done to replace missing sections of matrix. I remember reading a post where someone showed a fossil that had its matrix dyed a brighter color to increase contrast. You can see here with this skeleton the bones are nearly the same color as the matrix making the mesosaurus hard to see. Maybe I could dye the matrix a lighter color to make the Mesosaurus contrast a bit more? Also, what other preparation techniques could I employ to make this fossil look the part? I'm really considering trying this project, so any input anyone can provide would be extremely helpful.
