Hello, Last weekend I went back to Fossil Beach with my dad. Fossil Beach is located in Mornington, Victoria, which is approx 70km south of Melbourne. The location is part of the Fyansford Formation which is middle Miocene (10-15 miilion years old). I hadn't been here for a couple of months and was actually planning to go to another location in Bendigo (central Victoria), but we slept in and went here as a "fall back" location Anyway, what a day! There had been a lot of quite heavy rain in the previous weeks and there were so many fossils that had washed out of the exposed clay and onto the beach ...we were just picking them up among the rocks. It was quite warm inland, but at the beach the ocean was covered in thick fog which dropped the temperature right down ...luckily no wind. There were a couple of other group there also. Found this piece a couple of years ago at Fossil Beach, Mornington & has been ID as whale bone by Erich Fitzgerald of Melbourne Museum. I'm wondering if any of you guys might be able to narrow down which part of the animal this may have come from? The piece is 130mm L 25mm W 30mm D. Although Fossil Beach is local to us this is the only bone we have found in many years of looking.

Hi all! I have recently returned from a quick fossil hunting trip from Fossil beach in Victoria. I believe that I may have found some fossils but I am not certain. I would also appreciate If anyone could give me tips on fossicking at Beaumaris and Mornington, e.g What to look out for and better ways to look for fossils.
