After reading a few articles on removing matrix from fossils, I see most tool lists state a pin vise with carbide/carbon steel needles are standard equipment. I already have pin vises acquired from building models, but I seem to come up short on finding appropriate sized needles. What do you all use?

Hello TFF friends! Fossil Preparation has been something I have delved into on a surface level since I do not have the money to purchase air scribes and abrasives yet. So far I have been using a carbide scriber and some chisels or a dremel for larger matrix removal. Now I am looking to upgrade a bit and get a pin vise, they seem quite versatile and pretty cheap. I have found a vise that I think will be good for now, but I am now facing the task of finding needles to use with it. Can anyone recommend any good pin vise needles? I am looking to use them on matrix of different hardnesses from fairly soft shales to harder limestones if possible. Thank you for any help, Misha

The fossil forum members identified this fish years ago but I lost that information due to a computer crash. I can remember they thought it came from Brazil? and had an age attached to it. I found it at an estate sale in Racine WI. in the basement of the house. The owner said it had been in that corner when he purchased the house and was more than happy for me to take it out of his way. I think it is very interesting but would like more information. Thank you

Found this rock in Wisconsin US near Lake Michigan. Looked interesting but I have no good idea of what they are. The largest length of the black things is 12.7 mm or1/2 in. all encased in the light shaded rock band.
