I found this rock while hiking in a mountainous range around Central chile, 2 hours out from santiago. The area around where I came across was very elevated and dry, with features similar to the atacama(which was once underwater). It has ridges on the side of it, as well as having the size and shape of the outer part of an amonite shell. I used a rock identification app which told me it was made of limestone. Now I'm wondering if I found a fossil or just a weirdly shaped rock.

Hello, just wanted to quickly introduce myself as a new member. I am originally from the Canadian prairies, but recently took up a position at a small university in San Antonio, TX. My research focuses on plant-animal interactions and the evolution of plant reproductive strategies, but I have recently become interested in geology and fossils. One of the courses I teach is Evolutionary Biology, so I'm really learning a lot about the fossils around the San Antonio area (and further out). I am interested in fossils of all kinds, but as a plant biologist, I am particularly keen on hunting botanical fossils in the future. I suspect that I will be doing more reading/learning than commenting/posting at first as I have a lot to learn, but I look forward to contributing soon. Recently came across this (attached) on a hike in the Hill Country State Natural Area near Bandera (West of San Antonio), TX. This was on an exposed limestone outcrop with scattered dolostones, and I believe was part of the Glen Rose formation. Nothing too impressive, but I'm happy with this being my first upload. Best, Mason
