    Dumb question of the day

I've been prepping my fossils manually for years. Glue is my friend and my worst enemy. For some of my delicate micros, one drop is more than enough to encase the tiny object AND glue it to whatever surface on which it rests. I've succeeded in gluing my fossils to silicone mats, pin points, and my fingers through plastic gloves after the glue ate through the gloves. Lately I've settled on wax paper and lots of rolling the piece around to keep it from pooling when the glue invariably rolls off the surface of less porous shells. It still sticks to the wax , but at least the wax peels off the paper and comes off with a bit of acetone and a delicate touch. There has to be a better way to do this with less permeable surfaces. What do you do to keep from gluing your pieces to the table?

Ostrea prep- what PaleoBond to use?

I was trying to remove soil from an Ostrea compressirostra from Maryland, a piece broke off, and due to the very particular way the break was, I need to use something strong that can hold it together. I have a PaleoBond set (I don’t have Butvar or any other adhesives) and for such a fragile piece I need to get some insight on which PaleoBond to use. Fossil image attached.
  3. Hi everybody, Last year I found this awesome chunk of whale bone and I am getting enough time on my hands to prepare it. I think I need to consolidate the tiny cracks before I try to clean off the sand and dust. But I'd like to consult the experts before I proceed. I used to have Paleobond but that ran out and I don't know what to get for use on this big guy. Any thoughts or comments appreciated!
  4. Some days ago we saw on the website from Paleobond the Paleosculp kit colors. Fantastic! This is what we are looking for since, hm, end of the dinos perhaps. At the moment we use Apoxy scult, wonderful but has only 2 colors... What is you experience with Paleosculp kit colors? Does is really work to get the right color when mixing? Is it possible to mix it with more colors (acrylic or other?´) As we are not in the US we have to order and no european offers it. Before ordering I would be sure to get the right thing thanks for your input and responds
  5. Hello gang! With a repaired ticker, a solid bill of health and a finally completed off road capable vehicle; I am starting the planning for my annual July “super excursion”. As I purchase supplies and provisions I am planning to add various PaleoBond products to the mix. I’m looking for anecdotal information on the stability and shelf life of these products beyond what is in the documentation, this will help me determine what sizes/volumes I will buy. Discussion?
  6. Ill be working on a pretty big fossil and wanted to know any differences between paraloid b - 72 and paleo bond stabilizer . I've used paranoid on a few things but have no experience with paleobond stabilizer. Are they used the same ? Does paleo bond need any mixing ?
  7. I ordered one of those little 2 oz. bottles of PaleoBOND penetrant stabilizer to try out on a small rib fragment that's pretty fragile. For anybody who also uses this product, how are you supposed to open the bottle before attaching the microtip? Do you just use a pin or something to puncture the little "nipple" that the microtip slides over? Also, once opened, does the microtip or the the bottle have to be sealed between uses so that it doesn't clog up? I only got a few microtips with the bottle so I presume that they are are supposed to be re-usable. Sorry to post this here but I cantacted PaleoBOND directly and they haven't gotten back to me yet. Thanks!
  8. Hi, Can any of the UK members suggest a local equivalent of PaleoBond. Have had an look online. Not available locally. Can get it on that auction website but the postage is very high Thanks

    Paleobond Tips for Shells?

I have a big batch of thin, cracked, sometimes punky fossil shells I am trying to stabilize. Normally, I use watered-down Elmer's Glue, but this batch is so fragile that the wet brush was tearing them apart. I got a sample bottle of Paleobond and it worked great! It stabilized the shells and made a solid block of the wet, packed-sand matrix I wanted to leave in. Only problem is that it sticks to more than just the intended targets. I wear gloves to keep from bonding my fingers to the fossils, but that still leaves me to glue the gloves to the fossils instead, or whatever surface I rest the fossils on to dry. The day before yesterday, I came up with the idea to make a bed of pins on some Styrofoam to rest my projects while the stuff set. Kinda works, but the drips eat the Styrofoam! What do you all do to keep from gluing your fossils to the table, tweezers, and fingers? Part of the problem is that some of the shells are fragile, but barely porous the stuff runs off. I only use a little bit, but because it isn't porous, I get a shiny, wet looking shell. I suppose wet is a good look for something that was under the sea, but not always what one wants with fossil prep. Any suggestions?

    Carcharodontosaurus tooth repair

Had a Carch tooth come in the mail recently that got pretty banged up in the case. I was a little alarmed when I first looked at it, but there were even more small pieces when I opened up the case. A little patience, a few toothpicks, and a bit of PaleoBond and it is not looking so bad though! One thing I have found useful in gluing small pieces back together is that if you get a toothpick a little damp on one side, it will temporarily stick to the piece you are trying to glue. Makes it a lot easier than trying to get it in place with your fingers. Another thing, be really careful with your fingers and glue. I have *almost* glued my fingers to teeth I was fixing a number of times. It is easy to do working with small pieces.

    Glue for Egg Shell

Hi Everyone, I just purchased multiple pieces of dino egg shell that all come from a partial single egg the recently shattered and want to try to glue it back together. There is no matrix and the egg is hollow. I ordered some PaleoBond PB100X Structural Adhesive, is that all I need? Any advice? I've never prepped or reconstructed anything before and figured this may be a fun project!

    Superglue Bottle Clogs

For years I have been fighting the tips of Paleobond bottles getting clogged as well as the caps getting glued on eventually. I exacerbate the problem by buying my Paleobond in the largest possible container to lower cost and then refilling my 1oz bottles. I believe I have solved the problem. I rinsed out and thoroughly dried an empty white glue bottle and filled it with Paleobond. With the top open all the way, no pressure is needed for the glue to barely dribble out of the tip. You can close it a little and use some pressure to control the flow. I did this last week and have used it several times with no clogging issues and there is enough space between the bottle and the twist cap that the glue doesn't seem to bond the two at all after use.
  13. I decided to test out the effects that different preservatives would have on the same fossil. The results were surprising. Fossils used are a Pliocene Horse Teeth from Bolivia, and a Sea Biscuit from Taiwan. I used Paleobond, Mod Podge and a brandless handicraft varnish. In my opinion, the handicraft varnish had the smallest impact on the final appearance of the fossil, followed by mod podge, followed by paleobond. It should be noted however that mod podge would make the fossil slightly sticky, and this test is not indicative of the amount of protection the preservative would have on the fossil, only the final result of their appearance.
