  1. I found this trilobite today and hope to prep it, or possibly have it prepped. I have no clue where to start so I am wondering if you guys could give me some suggestions/advice. Also do people in the Cincinnati area do such work? If so how much would something like that run in price?
  2. Hello, I recently found a fully articulated fossil after splitting Altamira shale. However, the break was not even. I now have the fossil in two pieces and want to put them together. However, the bottom portion is not fully exposed but very thin. I need to split it in order to have the fully exposed fossil, but am worried that it will just break into a million pieces if I try. As you can see from the picture, I need the small rock to fully split along the fossil line. Any recommendations on how to approach this?

    Air Abrasive powder

Just Curious what powder everyone uses for air abrasive work on fossil ammonites, I heard aluminium oxide is pretty bad for your health and is highly flammable and can explode or some thing, just curious if there's a safer powder to use than that.

    Preparation and ID

Hi this is my second preparation project I’ve ever done, I also need some help identifying something. Original fish vertebrae Finished Original mosasaur vertebra, but might need help on ID Finished. Original, and finally my favorite. A Mosasaur jaw with mosasaur bone. Finished. here are the tools I used
  5. I wish this was a post to celebrate an incredible accomplishment but instead I am extremely scared that through my potential carelessness, the likely greatest find of my life may be forever changed. I just a few days ago on 6/6 found this stingray fossil at American Fossil Quarry in Wyoming just and was able to keep it because it was at that location. I have been on a road trip and have been storing it in a plastic tote bin with bubble wrap and then fish fossils underneath wrapped in paper towel. I took the lid off for a prolonged period to air out the bin and I think this was a grave mistake and let in humidity. The paper towel was all heavily damp and many of the fish fossils had very obvious signs of mold/mildew growth and discoloration. And now I fear the stingray may show some as well. I desperately need advice on repair and preservation asap. I really need help trying to fix this mess as I’m still on the road for another week. It may not be super obvious in the images but it is the areas that appear a grayish color in contrast to the orangeish brown. The last image is the closest picture I took on the day it was found to show any potential change. This was a lifetime find and I will be crushed if I’ve caused irreparable damage. Please help. Any advice in repair and preservation is greatly appreciated. And I’m sorry to all those that see this and are disappointed in the poor handling of this rare piece, I’m more than disappointed in myself if things are what they seem. And if by a miracle the stingray is perfectly fine then any advice on the fish fossils would be great.
  6. hi! i recently acquired some trilobites with the intention of sending them off to be prepared professionally. however i would also like to start prepping myself and thought this might be a good opportunity. i’m a student and don’t have the biggest funds so was looking at the Dremel 290 engraver with the zoic palaeotech fossil prep bits. this with ppe is about £54 which is great for me. these are the specimens i would like to prepare: the main advice i wanted was should i stick to going the professional route on these guys or trying it myself. i’ve heard that very fine detail is hard to get without an air abrasive tool which i cannot get, anyone able to give their advice is welcome!!
  7. Hi all, I have this beautiful trilobite and was wondering if it would be a good candidate for prepping further. Information I have on this is Flexicalymene from Orab, Ohio. My questions are: Would you think baking soda at a low PSI from a handheld air eraser (thinking of buying a Paasche) would clean this up nicely and give that shiny, "wet" look? I recently saw a photo of a similar specimen where the person who prepped it exposed the hypostome. Would you think that is a possibility here? I am unsure if hypostomes always preserve - though the trilobite looks like it may have it (see photo)
  8. Hi, I'm looking at this to prep soon, it's got a lot of shell on it still, not much mechanical prep needed really. What would you do, im planning to clean up the keel line in a couple of places but how would you bring the best out of it? Thanks, Chris
  9. Hi, I've got a bit of a collection of large blocks from the Aust bone bed and not sure I'm doing the best job prepping them. So far I've been breaking them with a hammer and then acid prepping anything interesting I find with vinegar. The bones are usually fragments because they break when splitting the blocks. How is this material best approached, can anyone give some advice please?
  10. Had a mega trip to Dorset this weekend, finally found a couple of fairly complete nautilus, how would you prep this? Not done much, have an electric scribe and elbow grease..
  11. Looking for a conversion/modification kit for my Chicago scribe. Only one I can find is through zoic. Was hoping to find one in the US. Any information will help

    Barasaurus prep thread

So, I thought I would share this topic with you all. This is going to be the beginning of a long thread with any luck. This is the first one I have prepared, coming close to the end. It's turned out ok. I feel it could be better, While looking at multiple examples, and studying the bone through journals, previously prepped specimens, and other resources is great. It's a completely different game, learning to prepare first hand, and the differences in each nodule affecting position and rotation of the bones. So a friend of mine contacted me saying he had some unprepared nodules, and me loving a prep challenge, accepted. . Arriving shortly after my trip to the IOW, (which went well and I will do a report on shortly) this nodule was delivered by the good local postal woman It had already been split to check the contents, and was more of an example piece than a more pristine uncracked nodule And this is the current prep stage I am at. Just exposing more of the vertebrae column and ribs and the fine details, and smoothing out the scribe marks. This work can take some time, as it needs b72 after each new section is exposed, due to how small and fragile the bones are, but when you compare this to how they are normally seen( just split in half with a complete loss of detail) I think the time is well worth the effort, and once this is finished I can't wait to get started on the next one. I hope you all enjoy reading this short prep story and will try and post more of my prep work in the future. (Been slacking on the show and tell part in recent months.)
  13. Hi everyone, I need some help regarding my first preperation work. It's a Cuban Meg tooth in limestone. What is the best way to get the limestone off?

    Trilobites

Hey guys, I'm ridiculously new to fossils, and well I want to learn how to prepare my trilobites for display. May I have suggestions?
  15. I recently acquired some matrix with teeth from the Denver gem and fossil show this year. I’m unsure what is best to do. Leave everything in the rock, get the teeth out and see if I can find other fossils as well, or just prep the teeth out a little and leave them in the matrix. I have prepped a lot of Moroccan phosphate material but never something from the states. Also if anyone can help I.d any teeth that would be helpful. Here are a few of them.
  16. Hi all. I looked through a few pages of this forum, but couldn't find an answer to this question. I hope I'm not duplicating something asked and answered elsewhere. My family came across this mortality plate in Carfordsville, IL earlier this summer. We've already cleaned it off with water and a toothbrush, but I reached out to a geology expert at my state's museum to ask her what else we could do. She told me: "[T]he fossil is sitting in a rock that will dissolve in acid. If you want, you can try letting it soak for a bit in some dilute vinegar and water for a few hours at a time and then brushing at it as you have if you want to try to clear a little more of the rock away. The fossil itself is harder but is also made of a material that will dissolve, so that's why I recommend doing that slowly if you choose to go that route." She mentioned elsewhere in the email how understaffed and over worked the museum employees are right now, so I don't want to bother her anymore. I wonder if anyone on here knows 1) what ratio I should use in preparing a vinegar and water solution, and 2) how long I should soak it for and/or how long might be too long? Any advice would be sincerely appreciated!
  17. Hi guys Fairly new to this. Went to an abandoned sand stone quarry near me. Found loads of brachiopods and some criniod stems. But best of all this big clam. It might be hard to tell but theres a big brachiopod under that rock. Please can you share some tips for getting it out safely. Done as much as i feel comfy doing with my fossil hammer and chisel.
  18. I would really like to start prepping fossils (at least sometime next year) and I need some equipment that is not very loud. I am on a 200-300 dollar budget. I don't know if you can tell me this or not but does anyone know where I can get unprepped fossils, because I don't live in an area with very many unprepped fossils. Thank you in advance.
  19. I'm looking to clean 2 whale verts i found long ago. I am experienced with prepping mammoth and rhino teeth but not whale. Can anybody help me?
  20. This would be my first Mammoth Molar I'm preparing again in 10 years. My first one was a 10lb Mammoth molar. This one is quite small of course since it's from a calf. It has been laying in right water for 1,5 months and at the moment I'm glueing the last 4 pieces since it's precision work with this small piece. I'm really glad I picked up on this one (Found in Maasvlakte, Netherlands). I found it in pretty poor condition you guys can see in the pictures. But I have never seen this molar, so I'm amazed anyways! I will show you guys the full picture when it is all done! If anyone has tips too for my next prepairs, I will take any advice and tips!
  21. Hi Everyone, I have several verts that are encased within the red matrix from NSR. Has anyone soaked that in a vinegar solution? If so, did it work? Did it hurt the fossils? If there is another way to remove it let me know. Planko

    I found a crab arm

Im back at it again collecting more concretions. I found a bunch of small ones once again from the lincoln creek formation! But the wild thing is that I found this: Me and a bud were getting this concretion out of the rock when this arm was exposed. I plan to use a pin and hammer to get the tip of the claws out and I think I should super glue them onto the arm? And what can I do to preserve this arm because this is really cool.
  23. I've tried everything I can think of to remove this mud that is caked on so many of my newly acquired specimens. Every time I use my brush to remove the mud the fossils beneath become horribly disfigured. Any ideas for how to remove the mud and keep the fossil intact at the same time? I can't use water because the rock is soft and cracks when wet. Any brush recommendations? Currently I am using a standard paintbrush.

    Fossil Shack Air Scribe

Hey everyone! I am looking for an air scribe to help remove matrix from fossils I am prepping. I am looking at the Fossil Shack Air Scribe since it is within my budget and looks effective. Does anyone know if it is good? I am looking to prep White River formation matrix and Lance formation matrix. Thanks!

    Electric Hand Chisel

Hey all. I am looking at getting an electric hand held chisel. I have a few in mind but cannot find one with rock chisels for a hand held. Anyone have a suggestion. Yes, air with a compressor would be better but noise is an issue as I like working in the garage very early.
