Hi there. I found this on a field trip to a private quarry in Midlothian , TX (just south of Dallas). It was in limestone / shale in the ATCO formation, where there’s lots of shark teeth and fish bones. I’m pretty sure it’s been compressed as most of the shark spines I’ve seen are much more round and this is pretty oval shaped. Does anyone have any guesses as to species? Thanks in advance!

I think this is some kind of shark vert perhaps Angustidens or Hastalis. On Facebook someone who was knowledgeable said ray vert.

My hunting partner cancelled on me so I decided to try out some new spots alone in Northeast Texas. My luck was bad! I started off my day with a leaking boot in 35 deg weather. At my next stop I had three dogs across the creek growling and barking at me. I figured they would go away. I was wrong! They came barreling down into the creek aggressively towards me. The largest of the three was determined to bite me while the others growled. I went to war with my 5 ft hickory walking stick. After a couple of solid hits I won the battle and they retreated. They climbed back to the top of the creek bank and growled and barked at me for another 30 minutes or so. I found a few items and walked a mile back to my truck only to realize I had lost my phone. I started to give up and just report my phone lost but decided to look for it. I hiked the mile back through the woods down into the creek and somehow managed to find it. I did manage to find a nice size shark vert, fish vert and a couple of artifacts. My Brazos hickory walking stick has saved me more times than I can count from hogs, dogs and waist deep mud. It's a little heavy but worth it.

Went out for a quick hunt this afternoon. I found a sweet upper anterio-lateral cow, a barracuda tooth which is rare for the beach i was on, and my largest to date shark vert. Also i think i found some sort of munition the round ball beneath whale material it is made of metal and is mushroomed on one side. Not to shabby for a quick walk.

Man do I love this river! We were the first ones to the beach today and it was a good thing too, three hours later it was filled with folks showing up for the various Easter events at Stratford Hall. On of the first things I spied was the biggest shark vert that I had ever found, and I was feeling pretty stoked about that until my wife let a yell and held up one bigger. My wife did the racetrack pattern along the water line while I settled in for sifting, she ended up doing better than I did, though I did end up getting some cool finds as well. Total haul. Shark verts. Couple of fish verts and an epiphysis. Croc tooth, dolphin teeth, and a crab claw.
