Sam III posted a topic in Fossil IDMy kids and I were jetskiiing not far off the coast of North Wildwood and stopped at an island called Champagne Island. As we walked the perimeter of the Island I noticed this (pictured below) in a few inched of water. I gave it to my cousin who is a marine biologist at Rowan University in Glassboro NJ and he let a bone specialist there study it. The bone specialist said it was from a 10-15,000 year old mammal most likely a sea-lion. Thats all the information I have on it and it presently sits on a shelf in my living room. So I came here to share my story and see what you guys think. The piece is about 7" long.
Hey, this kind of stems from my last thread about South Jersey site recommendations. I did a little research and found that my hometown (like most of South Jersey) is built primarily on the Cohansey Formation, at least as far as "bedrock" is concerned. So my question is: What, if anything, have people found from the Cohansey? I ask so I can get an idea of what I may find if I start looking along the local stream beds.
Hey, first post on this site. I've been volunteering at the Edelman Fossil Park (formerly Inversand) for a few years and am wondering if there are any other sites in the southern part of New Jersey that people know about. I have been to Big Brook, Ramanessin and Shark River on trips with my geology class, but they are farther than I would prefer to go for an average trip, and not worth the drive on a bad day. Particularly looking for sites in the Navesink or other Cretaceous formations. Thanks.
My husband and I found this strange textured piece in South Jersey at the edge of the Pinelands. Is this a Fossil or Rock? Any information will be appreciated. Thank You Below is what we determined so far: Dull black, not shiny. Smooth Brain like texture on surface. 7" long x 1.5" wide Not magnetic. Does not fizzle with vinegar. Does not flake or chip easily. Not porous.
