Going really basic here being new on the fossil game i wanted to know how a fossil gets created because i have read that the bone gets replaced by rock or sediments and they take its original form but if that's the case then we are not holding teeth, we are holding rocks in the form of teeth when holding a fossilized tooth for example. I don't really know so if someone could please explain to me if the fossil is actual tooth like it was back then or it becomes rock and the general process it would be much appreciated.
Spinosauridaes were a family of large carnivorous Dinosaurs, first appearing at the very end of the Jurassic. They have crocodile-like skulls and teeth, large hands, arms and claws and in some cases, arched backs and/or spines. Their diet mainly included fish and other aquatic animals but if the opportunity arose for a larger meal like another Dinosaur, they would most likely take it. Because of their mainly aquatic diet, they probably avoided most conflicts with other predators of their region. Not to much is known about this family, since it's somewhat recent in the fossil community, though it's still quite interesting in most peoples opinion. Baryonyx is a personal favorite
I have a tooth of a spinosaurid from North Africa. These are pretty common in the market. My question is, can species be told apart by teeth? There are only three species of spinosaur in the area I believe, Spinosaurus (morrocensis?) and sigilmassasaurus, and the baryonyxid suchomimus. Can teeth morphology be used to determine which one? Surely it must at least be able to tell suchomimus from the other two, right?
So I was reading in The Dinosaur Heresies: New Theories Unlocking the Mystery of the Dinosaurs and Their Extinction by Robert T. Bakker and in it I came upon a line that says "Modern reptiles dominate the role of large freshwater predator. But dinosaurs didn't produce any swimming predators at all." (Pg 82) With the new evidence from Dr. Ibrahim about the spinosaurs, does Bakker's claim need to be revised? For those who have read his book, is there any other pieces of information that need to be revised in this book? I am writing a short paper for a biology class on it and would like to know what things have been contradicted by new evidence. Thanks!
