Hi all. I recently picked up this stromatolite piece. It was caked in mud and clay, and has consumed me for the past ten days or so. I've given it two long Iron Out baths, a night in bleach to loosen up everything in the crevices, and more pressure washing than I can count. The top half of it has turned ivory white, but the bottom is black with a few traces of white coming out. Today I finally broke down and tried a muriatic acid bath. It soaked for 45 minutes, followed by an hour in a neutralizing solution. Then it got a lengthy pressure wash and finally a scrub with a wire brush. After all of that it still pretty much looks like it did yesterday. When I filled the container with acid around the blackened area there was no reaction at all. Does that mean there's nothing to get off of it? Could this be its real color? If not, is there anything at all I can do to clean it? I'm terrified that I've already damaged it or will with anything else I try.

My boy and I decided to try cleaning some geodes with Iron Out. We left them in a mixture for a few days, and found that all of them had some degree of black staining when we pulled them out. I Googled it, and it turns out that this can happen when you either don't clean the geodes well enough ahead of time or don't properly mix the Iron Out into the solution. I'm probably guilty on both counts. Is there anything I can do to clean them? I made some progress with a simple toothbrush and running water, but also broke some crystals this way. There's also no way I can get into all of the cavities with a toothbrush. Would putting it back into a better mixed Iron Out solution fix things? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Matching the coloration of a woolly rhino skull?
SimpleCollector100 posted a topic in Fossil Preparation
I am interested in getting a woolly rhino skull. I found one but the colorations are slightly off since they are from two different animals. Is it difficult to have the colors match? Maybe with some type of staining that wouldn't be too hard and degrade/damage the actual bone? Or is whitening a better approach? Thank you- 9 replies
