I’ve already bought a few specimens, but I haven’t really collected fossils personally. What do I collect first? Where to collect? What to look for? How do I identify a promising collecting spot? I want to collect fossils without having to travel beyond my state, Virginia, (obviously due to ‘rona.) Obviously this may not be the best time to leave the house, but I want to at least be prepared for when we are released from quarantine! Already have a the basic collecting tools I just need to know how to use them (any specific techniques, or is it basically the same as when your mineral collecting?)

Humble beginnings: Where was your paleo passion realised?

I remember exactly how I got pulled into the world of paleontology. It was back in the third grade when my passion was ignited by my teacher at the time, Ms. Sisler (kudos to her). She was running through the day's science section, and she told us about the process of fossilization. I do not know how this hooked me, but after class I asked her for more about it. She pointed out a large 300 page book with many multiple photos and descriptions of various fossils and said "dig in". I did not put the book down once for the rest of the day. And that is where it all started for me. You got a similar start up story? Share it with us below! -
Are there any videos of a fossil collection venture from start to finish? I was hoping to learn some of the standard practices that might be learned from watching experienced collectors go through the entire process. I was fascinated by the micro fossils posts and thought of all the processes to reach that point. in a video I thought there might be nuances that may be missed in a text only format, even though the post were extremely thorough.
