Kiamichi/Goodland (?) echinoids,oxytropidoceras&gastropods
Shaun-DFW Fossils posted a topic in Fossil Hunting Trips
Another hundred or so prestine hemiaster and heteraster echinoids, some foldy and rough shape oxytropidoceras of various sizes, and my first complete engonoceras ammonite. I almost forgot the hamite. I like the cylindrical shapes of the gastropods, too. Not bad for 1.5 hours on a cold day. South Tarrant County, Texas. -
My first time back hunting since surgery. I'm not 100 % yet but I had a good morning hunt in Tarrant County TX. It was my first time hunting a different location besides NSR so it was fun. I found a nice variety of Spiral (Mariella) Ammonites, Echinoids and Nautilus. I had to leave the huge ammonite My hammer was no match. :/

I took a road trip today and hit everything from the Austin Chalk in Ellis County, TX: to the Goodland limestone of western Tarrant County, TX: While in the Austin Chalk of Ellis County, I found this unusual concretion: The piece is approximately 50mm x 25mm. I thought the "vertical" structure seemed unusual.

I decided I needed to find some new spots to hunt, so this morning, after doing some investigation using Google Earth, I planned a road trip west of the Ft. Worth, TX area. Using Google Earth, I had spotted a creek that looked promising, so I drove to the area to check it out. I found the bridge as planned, pulled over off the shoulder of the road and proceeded into the creek to check it out. Immediately after crawling down into the creek, I was greeted with these two scenes: I proceeded to look around a bit more and proceeded to the other side of the creek to following these outcrops: While walking along these outcrops, I found a couple of large nautilus that part was still imbedded in the outcrop and part was already broken away. One of these nautilus had to be at least 24 inches (approx 10cm) in diameter. I continued down the outcrops to see what else I could find and thought I would take a pic of these large partial nautilus on my way back. I did find a complete nautilus still imbedded in the outcrop: I then found this piece laying at the base of the outcrop: Shortly after this, I heard someone hollar and turned around the see two deputy sherrifs standing on the other side of the creek. They asked me to come back over the creek and talk to them. Long story short, they escorted me back to my truck, checked my driver's license, checked my back-pack, then proceed to tell me that I couldn't be there and needed to be on my way. Not necessarily wanting to be ticketed or go to jail for "trespassing", I decided it was time for me to leave. Quite a disappointment considering I had been in the creek less than an hour and it looked quite promising considering the short time I got to spend there. Needless to say, I never did get a chance to take any pics of the large nautilus.
