Hi all, a family member found this 30 years ago near Anza Borrego in southern CA. Looks a lot like juvenile tortoises I've seen in the area. I'm aware that fossil testudines are known from the area, but 1) is this one?, and 2), is a family, genus or species level identification possible from this partial specimen? Thanks. (The ruler is in inches. The specimen itself is about 9cm x 7cm.)

Edited 3/11/23 to better reflect current info. I've recently gotten interested into the turtles of the Hell Creek and Lance formations and decided to compile what I've gathered onto here. It's amazing to see how many different species have been described from these deposits. I've also tried to attach links to papers that talk about these turtles (at about 22 species!). If I've gotten anything wrong or missed anything please let me know! Adocidae: Adocus sp. I found this rock on Ocean Beach in San Francisco. I have In the same area over the past few weeks recovered several fragments of Sand Dollar fossils probably about two million years old, according to a local geology/oceanology professor who recognized them right away. I am wondering if this rock might be a turtle scute as I have seen similar looking samples online that were Holocene turtle scutes. The sand dollars were the first fossils I’ve ever found outside of fossilized clams so I have no problem if this is just a rock. Many thanks in advance for the expert guidance and help.
