I found what looks like a tree cast fossil in black shale layer but it does not look like what I have seen on display. It to me made of a very fine grain sediment and peel off in layers. I could see a complete log imbedded in the shale on one of the upper layers appears to be less than a foot in diameter.

Hi Everyone, During a recent trip to Giboa NY, i found this unusually large leaf-like fossils. Giboa fossils are from the Mid-Devonian, 380-385 million years old. Any ideas as to what it is? Thanks in advance, Regards

I have been able to determine most of the tree fossil pics I posted from a couple days ago are Sigillaria trees from the Carboniferous Period (thanks to Rockin' Ric), but I am still confused about the one listed in this follow up post. I found it near the others, but it does not seem to fit with the others. I tried to search the internet and have not been able to identify it. I provided more detail in a close-up and top view photo. Any help would be appreciated.

My son and I just started fossil hunting and we are looking for some assistance identifying our finds from this weekend. Any help would be appreciated. Location: Southwestern Pennsylvania mountains in and near a creek tributary about 6 to 10 feet below original ground elevation created by watershed. Elevation: Near 2000 feet Material: Appears to be sandstone.
