I am very curious as to how people view undescribed fossils in their collections or in general. I really enjoy that I have a few unknown species lurking in my small collection. I think students will really enjoy learning how these species get identified and classified. My son enjoys them because he really loves the challenge of drawing something unknown. There can be great scientific value in these undescribed fossils but that is not always the case. I doubt any scientists are going to want my unknown Odontoceti teeth because they are not diagnostic. However, one of the unidentified species in my collection is a shark tooth and that might be useful or even somewhat important because shark teeth are diagnostic in many cases. If I had fossils that could aid in describing a new species, I would be stoked to donate them because adding to scientific knowledge is very important to me but I wonder how others here feel about that. So how do you feel about undescirbed species in your collection ? What are your opinions about donating pieces from your personal collection for scientific research? Share your own undescribed or unidentified species if you like. This is my unidentified, possibly undescribed Symmoriidae shark tooth. This tiny tooth is likely a known species but maybe it is not. I like thinking I may have something that could contribute to a new species being discovered someday. Wishful thinking maybe lol
