  1. This is a question about best practices for highlighting fossils in place in public parks without risking vandalism (by which I mean someone removing the fossils for their own private use). This question has arisen in the context of several complete trilobites that have now been found on blocks of limestone used as landscaping in a chicago public park (pics below). Has anyone seen or taken part in an effort to highlight fossils in place in a public city park in a way that deters vandalism rather than invites it? Deterrents might include framed enclosures around the fossils, or maybe even a clear epoxy block poured directly onto the fossil? I don’t think “honor system” methods used in national parks would work in this urban cultural context, and a building to enclose the whole site would be overkill and would run counter to the purpose of the site’s outdoor green space. All feedback welcome, including names of folks who might have better answers than we ourselves can think of
  2. Man jailed, fined for using sledgehammer to dig up dinosaur fossils in B.C. CBC news, British Columbia, January 24, 2023 Jail time and hefty fine handed to man who helped dig out fossilized B.C. dinosaur tracks By Simon Little Global News, January 23, 2023 Yours, Paul H.
  3. From the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/26/world/australia/new-zealand-whale-fossil.html 2 men used a rock saw and chisel to extract a fossil whale out of a riverbank that was a local attraction. Its not clear if thats illegal per New Zealand law. There are a few quotes from Bobby Boessenecker in the article. It seems amateur and commercial fossil collecting has exploded in the past few years along with the fossil market. The article implies that we'll see more of a push to codify laws to protect these fossils in response.
  4. Reptile tracks dating from 251 MYA from the early Triassic were stolen around 2017/2018 from Capitol Reef National Park, but only recently noticed. Hopefully the perpetrators will be found and the fossils recovered. https://www.nps.gov/orgs/1563/care-rfi-05102022.htm
