Head scratcher here sorry, I found this in Maori Bay, just south of Muriwai. Looks like bone, feels like bone, but as the first picture makes clear, sitting in an obviously volcanic rock. There are recorded starfish, tube worms etc from the area but I dont know enough to assess correctly. If it helps, definitely porous. *edit* there was a clear indentation in the rock once removed, not just resting on top.

Hi team, I found this a number of years ago, had never seen anything like it, and haven't seen something like it since. The pock marking is pretty consistent, and it is lightly attracted to a pretty powerful stack of magnets. I suspect its volcanic, and am hoping it is some sort of ejecta from the "Banks Penninsula" volcano. What things can I do to diagnose? There is a closeup photo of a small section that has chipped off, which looks to me like rust staining.

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I have this interesting rock. It is about 7 inches wide, 7 inches tall, 3 to maybe 4 inches deep. I believe it was found a few miles from an extinct volcano, so I'm guessing it is at least partly volcanic. But parts of it look sorta plantlike, or perhaps like teeth. (The tan, tapering rods) and the nearly-lavender part that drapes around the knobby, deeply textured parts looks skin-like. So I'm curious: what is it? I will try to upload photos.
