Jim Kovalchick
My wife annoyed me by finding this at Myrtle Beach today. Can folks confirm this is a mammoth tooth fragment. She gets to spend a lot of time at the beach. She finds stuff on my bucket list and doesnt even know what's she's finding. Grrrr
Misha
Yes, that does look like one. For the future it is best not to post photos where the fossil is wet as that makes it more difficult to see certain things. Nice find! I am sure if you keep looking you will find one too. Jim Kovalchick
Thanks to everyone for the ID opinions. I got a chance to handle the fossil today. This is a broken off end of the tooth. The root is in pretty decent shape but the business end is badly chipped off, probably by either a sand dredge or rolling in the surf. It's also bigger than the first pictures would make it seem. It is roughly about a third to a half of a house brick in size. My wife soaked it in fresh water for a few days. Does anyone think it needs a preservation coating? Thanks, Jim K
Plax
Difference in photography is amazing. I would never imagine they were the same specimen. that is amazing sharpness in the current photo.
