Possible fish jaw from Calvert Cliffs

Hello all,

Today I was hunting at Brownies Beach (Maryland, Miocene) and found a rather strange piece of bone. To me it looks like the rostral  portion of a jaw with false teeth but I’m honestly not sure about what it is. Maybe Wahoo material? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Anyways, I hope you all have a wonderful thanksgiving.

Looks more like part of a crab claw, to me. :headscratch:

Wait for some other opinions, though.

Hm, looks like bone to me but I could definitely be wrong. I’ll upload pictures tomorrow with better lighting and focus. That might help

Put me down for bone fragment. Doesn't look like fish bone though.

I can't imagine it being a fish jaw. Any reference for that ?

I mean my only thought that it could be jaw are the little spaced bony protrusions that look like false teeth. But I totally could be wrong, as I’m super amateur when it comes to Calvert Cliffs fauna. Thank you for your input and help!

It’s a fish jaw. I’ve found a couple recently. Not a crab claw. It’s a lot flatter on the top to me for it to be a crab claw.

I dont have anything handy but Stephen Godfrey wrote a book recently thats available as a pdf also which covers all the fish material of the calvert md exposures. Heres a picture of a similar jaw bone. But from the st marys formation of southern calvert.

That does it.

Almost turtle or marine mammal like texture with fish tooth sockets. ;)

Lots of different fish material. Not all are similar in shape or texture. Maybe I'll find a few more pictures from the time i spent there and share them.
