Fossil or not please

Bristololian

Recommended Posts

Hi, i am very new to the hobby and just wondered if this is a fossil vertebrae of sorts or not. Its about 8cm long and 4cm width. Thanks for any help. The area is known for Plesiosaur and Ichthyosaur fossils but it doesn't look right from images I've seen. more pics available but i need to make files smaller.

No bone texture or patterning neither on the surfaces nor the ends. You should research fossil bone and observe the textures and patterns on a few hundred specimens to get a "feel" for how bone looks. Some rocks can be deceiving even once you're familiar with bone. The more variations you see, the better you get at ID.

EDIT: And photographs of specimen make it twice as difficult as seeing it in person.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
