I have quite a few nice vintage dinosaur and prehistoric historic critter pictures hanging in our house. I don’t know the artist on this set I only payed 20p a picture for then in a junk shop , so a good  bargain I think

A fantastic prints from one of my lifelong favourite artists Zdeněk Burian of a nightmarish (and scientifically incorrect by modern stands) picture of an iguanodon , note the pre - fossilised bones on the ground.

I have posted this before , sorry for the repeat  but in contexts of this topic and them been quite wonderful sculptures , I thought I would chance it.

A  bit of fun looking back at Paleontology in its early days and the first ever dinosaurs sculptures exhibit in the would . The fantastic Crystal Palace Dinosaurs are a series of sculptures of extinct animals. very misguided to modern standards, housed in the London’ Crystal Palace Park. Commissioned in 1852 to accompany the Crystal Palace after its move from the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, they were unveiled in 1854 . The sculptures were designed  by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins under the scientific direction of Richard Owen. 

 

The Ichthyosaurus in a pose like a sea lion on land.

 

 

The Megalosaurus in a quadrupedal assemblage.

 

Teleosaurus And I have add a beauty fossil of for comparison Steneosaurus bollensis, Holzmaden Germany

 

and Iguanodon with a thumb spike nose.

I love the style on these! A little cartoony, with the exaggerated eyes and expressions, but so full of life. The round "matte" is also very distinctive.

Here is a pretty weird one- this is from an 1858 educational periodical published in America for German-speaking residents called Die Schule des Volks (The People's School). This two-page spread shows a bizarre ancient world full of sharks, plesiosaurs, giant snakes, ichthyosaurs, and many more fish and giant reptiles of all sorts. Unfortunately the printing quality of the original was quite poor, but I love that the artist let their imagination run wild. 

 

 

 

Between the images of the ancient environment you can see a depiction of fossils being found in a mine, and underneath them all was a chart of geological formations.

A friend gave me a print of that first image.  I think it was a giveaway at a show in Japan or another show he visited. I like stuff like that too.

 

You can put something like this in the "Show Us your Plastic Dinosaurs" thread.  It's not just for toys but all kinds of memorabilia.
