Ice age fragment

My father found this today, it is in a spot that has Pleistocene fossils. He seems to think that it is something special, he even thought that it can be a chunk from the sabre from a Smilidon. In my opinion it is at most an unidentifiable fragment. the location is on a beach by Charleston.

Dugong was my first thought. 

I am not seeing any enamel, which would rule out any kind of tooth.
