Last Devonian fieldtrip of the year

This Monday we went on the last fieldtrip for this year, the weather forcast was cold but sunny so a good excuse to get out.

We took te dog along and went to the quarry, A lonely excavator was operating in the far end of the pit, I went for a quick chat to let him know we were prospecting in the other side of the quarry and to ask if it was no issue for him.

The fossil rich deposits had'nt moved since our last visit, but we still did find a few cephalopods.

Natalie found a very promising one, the goniatite looks to be preserved completely in white calcite, I cant wait to get that one out of the matrix.

For me the find of the day was a rare Carinoceras sp. goniatite , I have only a handfull of those at home, but this one is very well preserved and not compressed.

Enjoy the pictures:

Looks like you and Natalie had a very productive quarry experience. Those goniatite and nautiloid finds look exquisite, especially the one preserved in calcite. Love to see them prepped.

The diversity and size of the cephalopods you get are quite impressive, especially in comparison to New York State and adjacent areas.  Over here 99% of what we get seems to be small Tornoceras.

Nice finds! I wish the Devonian here was as rich as your location. I call it 'Devoid-nian' here because I rarely find anything but corals.

Also, you have the right collecting partner out there with you! I have tried to take others with me and they quickly get bored which ruins my collecting experience for the day.

Nice finds! I particularly like the Carinoceras :)

Opalised fossils are the best: a wonderful mix between paleontology and mineralogy!

Q. Where do dinosaurs study?

A. At Khaan Academy!...

Awesome finds and variety! Cant wait to see that white one prepped!

I’m done with the prepp on the white goniatite from Natalie. Strangely the White has faded into gray and we don’t have a clue why. But it is still a very nice specimen :)

I wonder if the white in the one Gonaitite faded was because the white was the "fresh" state of the rock?
